Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

All the independents have done (including Wilkie) is to add extra policy and confirm they will support supply, and not support frivolous...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Compulsory voting = more morons vote.

Many voters don't bother looking into the issues or policies - the reason behind a brand light on policy ("Kevin07") winning with such a landslide 3 years...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

That was in reference to the sudden increase in boats over the last 2 years.

In regards to the policy behind it, both Abbott and Gillard were saying the same things about redirecting the boats, it...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Elections for the senate happened on 21st August. I think you're referring to the NSW state elections next year, and his standing for the NSW Legislative Council (the upper house).

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

That would only take government (and the House of Reps as a whole) yet another step away from the people - they are meant to represent the people. What you suggest has serious flaws. Local members...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Disagree. In principle that sounds fine, but the massive trade-off is losing local representation (unless you're referring to an even worse semi-proportional approach). Also, although people may...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Following an election there is the possibility of a joint sitting rather than double dissolution. It's only happened once before, and members of both houses vote with an overall majority required to...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

For 2 reasons I'm not going to suggest any other forms that could be looked at. Firstly because I'm quite comfortable with the current situation, and secondly if people want a change in form then...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Fraser was first appointed by the GG, however an election shortly followed, in which the people of Australia gave Fraser a very big majority.

This power of the GG, as the Queen's representative,...

You didn't really answer the question I asked. You answered the question why don't you want a monarchy. What I asked was what is the reason behind you two wanting Australia to become a republic?

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

This would require a change in the constitution of every State - I believe I read that a change in State constitution in Qld and WA at least would require a State referendum. So you could have the...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

There are far more important constitutional issues that need attention before any change such as this. You also don't mention what type of republic.

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Yes, it was good for Labor to spend on an insulation scheme that has put so many people at danger and caused house fires and some deaths.
