Not sure what the ice cream's like up north, but the stuff I can get from the artisanal makers here in Rome makes commercial brands redundant (for me). Though I do know what it's like to be attached...

Amy - I can't guarantee it'll be a substitute for Lurpak or Country Life etc, but it's worth a try.

Haha. No, Christmas pudding.

@ Lorna - neither my wife nor my mother use suet in that sort of pastry. Lard (strutto), but not suet. Over Christmas I took some home made mince pies to this place...

A couple of slightly unusual things my wife always stocks up on when we're back in Britain is suet and barley wine. Anyone fancy guessing why?
