The nuts are edible, and very good, BUT if the squirrels have started one and then dropped it, it is likely that the nut is bad or has a maggot in it.

We have a heavy crop of persimmons. There are loads fallen on the ground and the area is best avoided because of the number of wasps that fruit has attracted.

The weather here this summer was just about perfect for the indigenous trees and fruits - not especially hot, and frequent but not excessive rain. I can't imagine a better year for nut and seed...

We have a heavy crop of acorns this year. I haven't checked the sweet gum yet, nor the hickories, but the hollies and dogwoods have been loaded with berries.

My in-laws used to have a sweeper of a similar design, but I don't know where it went to - maybe it's in the back of the shed somewhere. :unsure They left us all their tools and yard equipment...
