Re: why would you...
I had my name on my car back home....for no real reason apart from the car was mine and it was ridiculously cheap when I bought it.

Re: why would you...
Personally, I got mine as I love my cars, and it was a nice personal touch to have it. As a kid I always read registration adverts in the sunday times motoring section, wondering what I would have when I could afford one.
Some people do it to hide the age of a car.
I think fudged words are simply cos they can't get a plate to show what they want, or the plate exists and its far too $$$$, or they are derranged and think it does look like what they want it to be.

Oddly enough, comment article in todays's "The National" on this very subject:
You can judge a man by his number (when it’s on his Ferrari)Rym Ghazal
AHe handed me over the two pieces of papers dismissively as he checked over his car for any scratches. “Sometimes people get jealous of such beauties and leave a mark,” he explained as he carefully dabbed at an imaginary fleck of dust.
I strained my eyes in the poorlylit car park in one of the Abu Dhabi malls to read the scribbles on the paper. One of the sheets was signed “Wardat al-Jazeera” (Flower of the Island), whom I naturally assume is a girl, and a mobile number. The other sheet had three names and one mobile phone number, and a sentence or two about the young sheikh’s “nice ride”.
“I usually get at least four new mobile numbers each time I park at a mall,” he beamed with a wink.

Re: why would you...
I also still have a plate on retention in the Uk.
In thoery its worth a shed load of cash - the true fact is if someone offered me anywhere near its 'value', it would be sold instantly.
Bought it 10 years ago when I was a bit younger and more impressionable. Now don't really give one...

Re: why would you...
In my case, a few years ago, I saw that a DVLA auction would include a plate which was my two main initials followed by a '1'. Decided it would always have value, so I made up my mind that I'd go up to a pre-agreed limit, but not a penny over.
Registered for the auction and everything, and went along. My pre-agreed limit was GBP 25k, and I waited about 3 hours for my lot to come up.
When it did, the nice auctioneer lady announced:
"Shall we start the bidding at thirty thousand pounds........?"
Oh well.........
(It was bought by a well-known coach company for GBP 47,250......)

Re: why would you...
A friend of mine bought FRU1T for around £20k hoping to turn a profit on it.. 3 years later he has put it on one of his cars ....the man from Del Monte obviously said NO.
An acquaintance who owns DB1 was offered an extremely attractive sum of money by a representative of a certain footballer. Not needing the cash in any way shape or form he politely refused. Unfortunately he wasn't interested in my plate for a million... C'est la vie...
