Good to see the government lose in court today.

It's what the people want. Control in the UK and two fingers up to The Establishment.

Interestingly the court ruled the Scottish Parliament and Welsh and Northern Ireland assemblies did not need a say.

Up yours Sturgeon.

The UK Parliament will back it anyway.

Exactly. That's what I liked.

And yes, the bit about not needing the minor countries vote is brilliant.

Absolutely, it's the right thing to do and I think most have said they will anyway.

Can't argue with the ruling. Preciously few people today will. It sits squarely with our parliamentary heritage and expectations of Parliament for a vote to happen to invoke Article 50. And Parliament will vote to invoke Article 50. It won't even be close.

The real furore when the lawsuit was first filed was because everyone knew Gina Miller didn't care about parliamentary sovereignty and was only using the lawsuit as an attempt to block Brexit.

The irony, of course, is that the lawsuit will have backfired against her because it only gives May the parliamentary authority that also makes it very difficult for outsiders to stymie or change the terms of Brexit, as Miller was hoping to do. The court ruling also clarified a number of points that makes it easier for the government to proceed further with Brexit negotiations, which closes potential windows of opportunities for missteps and legal challenges.

You obviously haven't been following the debates in other threads, then. I'm finished there, before I get to the stage.

Guardian staff must be suffering from shell shock.

ICM / Guardian poll 20-22 January:
https://www.icmunlimited.com/wp-cont..._jan_poll2.pdf

The Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats, UKIP, and other parties would fight a new General Election in your area. If there were a General Election tomorrow which party would you vote for?

Conservative: 42%
Labour: 25%
Lib Dem: 10%
UKIP: 13%

Negotiations between the UK government and the European Union are likely to begin soon. Which one of the following options would you prefer to see?
The UK leaving the EU regardless of what happens in the negotiations: 53%
A vote by MPs in parliament to decide whether we leave the EU or not, based on outcome of negotiations: 12%
A second referendum allowing people to whether we leave the EU or not, based on the outcome of the negotiations: 26%

Imagine that negotiations between the UK and the EU fail to reach an acceptable outcome within the time frame allowed. In such circumstances, do you think that the UK should ...
End negotiations and leave the EU without a deal: 49%
Postpone or suspend the UK's exit from the EU: 33%

Which one of the following do you think would be better for Britain?

Leaving the EU without a trade deal: 63%
Leaving the EU with a bad trade deal: 8%

In the event of a bad deal, the Prime Minister, Theresa May has threatened to retaliate by cutting business taxes in the UK in order to encourage businesses to move to the UK, in so doing boosting the UK's economy and making it more competitive than economies in the EU - in her words "Chaging[sic] the basis of Britain's economic model.. Do you think that Theresa May is right or wrong to threaten the EU in this way?
Right: 59%
Wrong: 18%

Brexit: MPs overwhelmingly back Article 50 bill - BBC News

MPs have voted by a majority of 384 to allow Prime Minister Theresa May to get Brexit negotiations under way. They backed the government's European Union Bill, supported by the Labour leadership, by 498 votes to 114.

The prime minister has set a deadline of 31 March for invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, getting official talks with the EU started. The bill returns to the Commons next week.

Yes, there's a bit more scrutiny to come but it's just procedure.

So much for Gina Miller and her crusade

The Brexit Bill has passed through the Commons unamended and with an absolutely thumping majority at third reading of 372.

Only the HoL stands in the way but we know they won't stop it or try to amend it, especially as it's a clean bill.

A toast to Gina Miller for absolutely ensuring that Brexit received nothing but the utmost democratic authority she must be feeling very proud of herself (I am sincerely thankful to her - I do support the parliamentary votes and stamp of authority they provided for they removed any potential legal hurdles down the road. Nothing's stopping this baby!)

Article 50 due to be invoked within weeks. Hold onto your hats. We're in for a wild ride

My instinct is that the whole withdrawal will be agreed and settled in less than two years. Probably 18 months.

May's Government played the long game or is this just a happy accident?

Gina said she was physically sickened when the country voted for Brexit. No doubt she will will feel a lot better now that proper Parliamentary procedure has been followed. As an added bonus, Scotland has been told it cannot influence the Brexit process and the Labour party has almost been destroyed. Three cheers for Gina!

I'm finding this a very bizarre thread, especially all of the gloating and goading going on. Whether Brexit is good or bad thing financially etc. remains to be seen, but there is certainly no benefit from the divide of the two sides.

The vote was so close that no matter which way it went, each side is dependent on the other to actually make the winning result a practical success afterwards.
