Why didn't she confide in the Thai authorities that her son's life is in danger?

I don't know, she could be just making it all up or could be a really scared woman who feared that going to the authorities would surely get her son killed.

question is not is she guilty of smuggling drugs - its is she guilty of knowingly smuggling illegal substances.

the law there does not differentiate though i fear.

Yes. She's not too naive or stupid to know that smuggling is illegal (whether money, drugs or whatever else she "thought" might be in the suitcase) or to find out that smuggling carries a death sentence in places like Indonesia.

Ag she was from the North East so being guilty of that is enough for 20 years in an Indonesian jail, surely. Finding the coke was just the icing on the cake.
