small island politics

Re: small island politics
Last polls are showing a slight widening of the gap today. Of course, polls are to be taken with a large pinch of salt. I hope for a hung parliament or minuscule majority, but expect a majority of about 50 for the Tories.

Since I asked it's fair enough for me to offer mine.
Larger share of vote than Blair in 1997 but a smaller majority.

Coalition Government is on the cards. May will be on her way out.

May to resign, Boris gets the job. Has to work with a wafer thin majority (if at all).

Well, my prediction wasn't too far off mark. She didn't beat Blair's 43% but seems to have tied it. But no majority!
We're going back to the polls later this year.

One consolation (sorry Shiva!) is that the Union is ironically stronger. Pleased with the Scottish outcome.
Like Ruth Davidson very much. Too bad she can't become the national Tory leader. She'd be a splendid candidate otherwise. She's the perfect specimen of the pragmatic, canny but cheerful Scot.

Unbelievable as it sounds most of us dont seek the total downfall of the Uk just a more democratic form of UK or independance.
I'm pleased with the result, SNP majority in Scotland with a valuable lesson, the nation split which will hopefully temper the worst of the tories and labour. I didn't particularly want either to win so a hung parliament that's sketchy should keep everybody on their toes for a while.
If teh tories go off on one labour can push for a change of government and if labour go off on one then visa versa.
Brexit has had enough zealotry perhaps its best approached with some sense, considered thought and the desire for a mutually beneficial outcome rather than a scorched earth and **** every body approach.

Torys to do a deal with the DUP racists. Then back to the original plan, hard brexit.
Who would have thought that.

Re: small island politics
The outcome is possibly the most reflective of the actual share of votes cast. May got 42.5%, which in just about every other election year should have delivered a big majority aka Blair or Thatcher got with similar figures. But not this year. The genuine upside is that the split between the two big parties in Parliament is much more reflective of their share of the vote than any election in, what, ever? And that is good (I say this with honesty) but only to an extent.
The downside is with no real majority for anyone, even in any kind of coalition, nobody will get anything they want. Nothing, nada, zip. And on top of that is this thing called Brexit. Oh my. Cancel Brexit? Wow. Don't cancel Brexit? Wow. Make it so Brexit-light that we're even worse off than a year ago? Wow.
Which is why we're likely going back to the polls again within the year. Everyone, including Labour, needs to proceed with extraordinary caution but even so I don't see how the current status can survive.
I did read an interesting suggestion in the Spectator that Labour and Tory go into a coalition solely for the sake of Brexit, given that both parties have acquiesced to Brexit, and once Brexit is completed, go for another snap election. A new National Alliance as we had in WWII. But Corbyn is no Blair or Brown and I cannot see him willing to go into coalition with the Tories. His loyal supporters would go berserk and he risks a meltdown just like the LibDems had.
Interesting times. I don't think any current leaders will survive the year well (not including the Scottish ones).

no need to apologise, such is politics and it'll do the SNP some good to have a similar dose of Mays hubris lesson.
