Default Saudi cars

Found this down the car souk. Very tempting:

560 SL. Lovely.

Very nice too. Shame it has those ridiculous U.S. spec bumpers and lights though.

Where's the car souk?

Guess it's advisable to head down there with a local/arab!

Head along the Khurais road heading east from the center of Riyadh. The car souk is on your left hand side after a few kilometers, not sure which junction but it is after the Al Kharj exit.

I thought it would be on your RIGHT hand side coming in that direction? Opposite the big Panda supermarket? That large area / district is generally what I consider to be the car souq. Also has a large number of 'inspection' places, where for around 500sr , you can have your prospective new purchase inspected for accidents, engine efficiency etc etc. Worth it in my opinion when buying used.

I use a workshop for repairs / maintenance on my motor, based down Sulimaniya, full of lots of other workshops, but the one I go to, has a old and somewhat sorry looking white Lotus Esprit parked inside. James Bonds' motor. Took me by surprise when I first saw it, and wondered how it got there. Will ask next time.

And yes, deffo worth taking a local with you down the car souq.

My mistake, it is the right hand side. BTW, you don't know a good outfit that I could trust with my Patrol? The main dealer is expensive and X/?#2!?&

A part of me is, Kitty. On my mothers side. She doesn't like to talk about it though. Her family left Ireland (her Grandfather) because they were persecuted for being too smart and stylish. Plus they hated potatoes.

I used to love going to the car souk when I lived in Riyadh. Every year when the 'newbies' went to buy their cars I would go along.

There were some really amazing cars there, including classic rollers and american cars, many in pristine nick.

The Merc in question, aren't the lights the standard type for this model?

As I pointed out above, they are U.S. spec, along with the big bumpers.
Normally they would be rectangular-ish, not round.

The 560 SL was never sold in Europe. It was primarily an American market car.

They are the pinnacle of SL development. After 14 years of development they are about as good as a Merc gets.

A few years ago, someone told me he had seen a batch of unsold De Loreans in Riyadh-it appears that not even the Saudis were gulible enough to buy them

how does the car souk work?

Is it actual auctions or just lots of car sales companies operating out of one area (a la Airport Rd/15th to 19th) in Abu Dhabi?
