I wonder how many organisations are indirectly supporting these sorts of things.

Jesus, just by living here in the Middle East I must be 'pro' many things that I wouldn't like to be.

Well I don't support any of them either

Aside from any well-founded concerns about the recent and not-so-recent behaviour of British armed services on the island of Ireland, even those who would have no truck with Irish nationalism may have other reasons to be queasy about poppy fever.

As always, David Squires puts it best.

These sorts of cartoons would be good / funny / worthwhile if they made sense.

Well he's known for his slightly obscure or non-obvious references - usually they are worth the effort to figure out but often require reading the comments below to pick up on them. It's hard to make an unlikely reference with just a cartoon drawing... But he does an especially memorable Harry Redknapp (with Rosie the dog drawn to look exactly like 'Arry). And he did a fantastic strip on this year's FA Cup final which actually managed to provide the gutting piss-take that John Terry deserved, including an passing nod to how Conte looks exactly like Nicky Wire of the Manics.

Yeah, I get it and it's all very smart etc but cartoons should be able to make life easier. Over complicating a cartoon is a bit like sneaking quadratic equations into the hungry caterpillar.

But it's in the Grauniad so of course it has to have clever references...

OK, big confession here: when I was typing a previous post in this thread I actually forgot John Terry's name for a while. I just couldn't bring it to mind though I could picture him in a million guises (my two favourites being when he missed the penalty in the CL final and when he slipped to allow in a striker, whose name I have chosen to forget, to score the fourth in a memorable 5-3 pasting by the Arse at the bridge back in 2011).

Is this a sign? Should I be worried? I knew I could retrieve his name by asking a colleague (Spuds fan..). "Chelsea, twat, biggest ever?" was of course immediately successful, though the name did finally come to me seconds before she replied.

Sorry Shed, not having a random go at your captain, leader, leg end (well maybe I am) but you are one of the people who will appreciate my concern that I couldn't immediately recall his name. Anybody else among the middle aged crowd here experienced something quite so jarring? (Seems an appropriate tangent for "Remembrance" day...).

This is why the following words were invented;

Thingamajig

whatchamacallit

Etc etc

It comes to you eventually, but a tad irritating when it is on the tip of your tongue!
