Default Out of their depth?

What percentage of people here do you think are way out of their depth job wise? I seem to have had a week of absolute idiots who don't know their heads from their arses.

Why do so any companies here employ imbeciles? surely employing people who can deliver is quite an important trait?

rant over

Do you have any particular nationalities in mind? Or is this a more 'general' feeling?

[NB: to be defined as a rant, a post must run for at least one hundred words]

Now now Kitty. Don't get you... umm... knickers in a twist...

But yes, I have the pleasure of working with not imbeciles, but people who don't listen to instructions.

It's not about nationality, I had to deal with some frighteningly ignorant people last time I was in AU, most of them from Europe.
One of them was my project manager!

A common thing in the region seems to be hiring employees who won't threaten your own position in the company. This is obviously counter-productive, and since people who operate like this are unlikely to be great managers in the first place the level of employee gets gradually worse the further down the chain you move..

I have met a lot of people here who are more focused on protecting themselves than doing a good job. And yes, this applies to all nationalities although it seems to get worse the more years you have done as an expat (I guess the logic is that there is nothing for you to go back to in the real world).

I have come across mobile crane operators over here, whose experience is limited to driving an ox and cart back home.

That's true, but also there are some I've come across who are employed for their paper qualifications but have zero people skills or any clue on how to manage.
My work/job motto has always been 'never ask someone to do a job that you couldn't or know how to do'

It's very common these days, not just in UAE but everywhere else!

Sometimes I despair...

I see it all the time, in the company I work for (multi-national) and in customers.

One of the issues I see is job titles are often misleading (everyone is a manager) which over-inflates peoples ego's.

When I first came her with my husband I offered to write a weekly newsletter for his staff and was given the title of 'Editorial Manager' and told I would be taken more seriously with a title..I did have to to myself!

Ah! The rampant self importance that comes with baffling job titles!
