Oh...to be a kid again !
Little things I miss and don't miss....yes, some of it has been posted before in dribs and drabs.
Street games, fun or just being daft:
Kick the can (my favourite).
Playing fitba' (footie) with my pals in the park using freshly mown grass as goalposts...instead of our jumpers (jerseys).
Standing by a shop window/doorway and raising one arm and a leg (like Harry Worth...my memory of him is fading)...so you look if you can levitate !
Making a snowman...though making the face with coal lumps, including the nose (never used carrots !).
Camping, fishing and/or youth hostelling in the Highlands and Islands.
Just jumping a burn (stream) and building dams with my pals.
Pillow fights with my brother and sister...my big sister always won with one of us always ending up crying...she was too rough !
Food & snacks:
The real Barrs' Irn Bru...seemed much stronger and fizzier back then, and in a glass bottle.
Tudor gammon-flavoured crisps.
Lovehearts and giving the special ones to your girlfriend.
Spangles.
Black jacks.
Cowan's highland toffee bars.
Sherbet fizz bombs.
Bazooka Joe bubble gum.
Liquorice root (does anyone know where you can get some ?)
TV:
Watching Coronation Street in black and white with our neighbours (who couldn't afford a TV) all around the living room (given my age away, there).
Six Five Special
Juke Box Jury
The Old Grey Whistle test (later on).
The Lone Ranger at 5 pm on Saturdays (after movie matinee), just after the wrestling with Mick McManus and co. and the teleprinter showing the football results.
Memorable films as a kid:
Jason and the Argonauts
Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Goldfinger (sneaked in with the adults to watch it at midnight !).
Things I don't miss:
School.
TV's without remote controls.
Toilet's with a chain pull.
Slide rules.
Those thick, school or gym navy blue knickers (no not on me...on my sister).
Lighting and smoking cinnamon sticks to look cool !
Collecting my mum and dad's Green Shield stamps, sticking them in the book, only for them to then go and get gifts of their choice.
Now politically incorrect:
Robertsons' jam gollywogs...collected the paper ones from the jars to send off for a metal gollywog badge.
Asking our Pakistani travelling ice-cream man (greensleeves was the music) for a "black man"...now a chocolate wafer.
Remembering when "having it off" just meant a haircut !
What's your favourite memories?
