Exclamation Need an urgent recommendation for a surgeon

I really didn't want to go public on this, but time is against us and we need things to get moving.

A week ago, my wife was diagnosed as having a tumor in her stomach. The cancer was confirmed by three separate an independent doctors from histologies and there's no point in denying anything to the contrary.

We were put in contact with a consultant surgeon based in Al Ain, who we visited last week and the surgery was booked for this coming Saturday. However, Mr consultant then went on to demand an additional 50,000 Dhs to cover his "professional fees". This is in addition to however much the insurance pays him for the procedure. Although I have the funds to cover this amount, the fact that someone blatantly wants to rip us off means that we now have to look elsewhere.

So...

We are looking for recommendations for a Visceral Surgeon, ideally based in Abu Dhabi but location isn't important, who can perform a fairly major surgery and reconstruction procedure and not rip us off. Ideally someone who can do this at the earliest opportunity, i.e. next week.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I can't help at all but is it worth contacting a decent GP and asking his/her recommendations? Sean Pendegrass used to be at Infinity clinic in Dubai but I'd heard he'd moved. He's very good and may be able to help.

Alternatively the American hospital in Dubai is always very highly recommended.

Abu Dhabi women forum might be very helpful too.

Bloody horrid news and I wish you both all the best and your wife a healthy recovery.

There's this...

And also a Dr Lorenz at the Cleveland Clinic/Sheik Khalifa hospital who operated on a small boy with a very dangerous tumour.

Worth a try.

Muscat, Oman. Whilst I didn't have visceral surgery, I have had lymph surgery.

Alternative is to hoof it over to the UK and go as a private patient at either Wythenshawe or Addenbrookes hospitals.

I'm sorry to hear your news - hope all will come out fine.

I can't advise on tumour specialists - however I have recently had surgery at City Hospital in Dubai and the surgeon was from the Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Dubai Medical Center.

I can definitely recommend both City Hospital and Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Dubai Medical Center.

Facilities, expertise and knowledge have been second to none. Also everything fully covered on insurance - no extra fee nonsense.

this is awful!! I hope she is ok, thinking of you. I would recommend the American Hospital as well, my husband had a cancer removed there a few years back, and you can sleep in the rooms with her as well.

Really sorry to hear your news, there is a specialist cancer hospital on right hand side before you reach Abu Dhabi from Dubai, my friend had stomache tumor which then spread to liver and bowel, he ended up having his operation in Al Ain but got all the assistance from the hospital, 2 years later he is still clear.Good Luck

Mate, sad news indeed. I don't have any info on surgeons in that region or elsewhere, but I do have some [B]very[B] important information that you might want to check out. Below is a documentary by G. Edward Griffin who presents a rather compelling case about the cure/prevention of tumors with diet. I urge you and all others to check it out.

Sorry to hear of your situation.

Last Sept I went to one of the biggest private hospitals in Dxb and they failed to diagnose my cancer for 3 weeks. They could tell me what I didn't have, but not what was wrong with me! I went to London for a second opinion from my doctor there and he referred me to The London Clinic. They knew immediately what was wrong and confirmed in a couple of days after 3 tests.

What the consultant said to me was, and maybe this is relevant in your case, that his recommendation was that I didn't return to Dubai for the op but have it there. Of course you have to weight up the fact that the hospital is a commercial operation. However he based his recommendation on the fact that my requirement was the most dangerous surgery in the gastroentological field and should be done by a surgeon who does this proceedure 2-3 times a week rather than perhaps 2-3 times a year. He felt this maybe the case of surgeons in Dubai, but of course couldn't be sure. Just his opinion.
Maybe this is something to bear in mind?

I wish you both good luck.

It is difficult to judge just how good the treatment you are going to receive is, anywhere I guess.

Thanks for all of the advice and kind words of support

We've managed to arrange an appointment for tomorrow morning with Professor Frank Branicki who practises at the Tawam Hospital, Al Ain (well known for it's cancer care), so here goes....

I wish you all the best and hope it goes well.

I'd be very tempted to have this done in the UK in an NHS hospital (if possible - and if your health insurance can cover it). As easy as it is to bash, the NHS is bloody excellent for this sort of thing.

Good luck.

We did consider it...but Mrs OP doesn't have a Border Control friendly passport and by the time we've been screwed around with a visa application it's another two weeks gone, which is time we just don't have.
