Morrissey showcases new record

Morrissey is set to hit the road for a series of UK tour dates next May

Morrissey has previewed his new album at a special playback for record executives and journalists in London.

The former Smiths frontman appeared briefly at the Pigalle Club in Piccadilly to introduce Years Of Refusal, which is due out on 12 February 2009.

"I am the person at the back, who is not Photoshopped and that is my son" he joked of the album's artwork, which shows Morrissey holding a baby.

"Please God you like it," he added.

Broken love

The album is a more upbeat and rock orientated affair than his previous record, Ringleader Of The Tormentors with the emphasis on spiky guitar riffs and thudding drum beats.

The punchy Something Is Squeezing My Skull opens the record which sees Mozza sadly contemplating, "There is no love in modern life."

Similar themes of broken love are tackled elsewhere most notably on That's How People Grow Up, which recently featured on his Greatest Hits.

Forthcoming single I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris finds Morrissey bleakly crying: "Nobody wants my love/Nobody needs my love."

Elsewhere, the former Smiths frontman delves into Mariachi territory in the cinematic When I Last To Spoke To Carol, as wistful horns give way to heavy drum rolls and plucking strings.

Towards the end he serves up a lush ballad in the form of You Were Good In Your Time, which is driven by a slow bass line and tinkling piano strings.

Closer I'm OK By Myself rounds off the 45 minute album, with Morrissey bitterly crooning 'I don't need you or your morality to save me/No, no, no, no no.'

Years Of Refusal was recorded earlier this year at Conway Studios in LA.

The singer is due to embark on a UK tour next May which will take in two homecoming shows in Manchester and a one off date London's Royal Albert Hall.
