I guess there must be a system in place where you have to keep track of what you are playing in public places and pay a certain amount of money to some sort of copyright organisation...

Wish the newspaper could use a consistent spelling of the group's name!

There is in UK to....Performing Rights Act and of course Musicians Union(s) but easily manipulated ergo reason I suspect Whiter Shade of Pale isn't really the most played song ............

I think Eva's point was that it is therefore a list of how many times monies have been received for playing a certain track, not necessarily how often it has actually been played....

The "most heard" song would need to have been released for some time now, and be sufficiently musically and lyrically inoffensive so as to be played in a variety of places and situations.
My college roommate played that song so many times that I am sick of it!

And how is this for an anorak question?
What is the connection between No 1 (White Shade Of Pale) and No 2 (Bohemian Rhapsody)?
Come on, have a guess............ answer later this evening.

MM,
What I mean is -look at the list of top ten...all classics in jukeboxes etc....
Only way White Christmas -which really is topical for 10-15 days a year could make it onto the list.
Easily to police in that scenario .
Compare to a local small bar with a music system rigged up and random artists playing all night...........
I don't mean ppl are pocketing money, I mean its easy for the controls to be manipulated
Sorry for confusion, normaly I am much clearer

The presence of White Christmas makes me a little suspicious

well yeah, but then it's played bloody continually in shops, supermarkets, on the radio from about september to december, lol...i don't know, i just know ppl have worked very hard at making their collections accurate, because they are serving both the record companies and the performers alike...the organisation i worked for used to work closely with ppl and their equivalents across the world, so i do know something about it!
