You might need to check it's turned on. Or rather that it hasn't been turned off.
Check Settings -> Messages and make sure iMessage is turned on.

Nailed it Martin. I iMesage so many people and upon checking find they’ve bought an iPhone in the pit and iMesage is turned off by default #notauaerevenuethingatall

I use whatsapp for personal stuff, texts for work stuff generally. But I reckon I send 1-3 SMS a month. Tops.

I'm all over whatsapp.... and the same as Scamp on SMS's. Uber rarely.... All I get is spam and automated message from the bank etc.

WhatsApp, LINE, Viber, Facetime usually only for video but then only as a backup to LINE and WhatsApp.

If you look carefully at the settings you will see that you can also opt to send messages as an SMS (text) when there is no wi-fi available. Quite handy.

I have a few friends who still insist on talking to me only via imessage, despite them having whatsapp and the only reason I can think of is that they have Mac OS and its easier for them to imessage through that. I just like the draw function in it and have become quite an expert in drawing male / female appendages in less than 10 seconds.
