Re: ID cards
It clearly says in the Gulf News article that managerial/professional expats have to have the cards by the end of this year. Others have a deadline of 2010.
There are 24 offices across the country, i.e. the UAE. There are currently three in Dubai.
The site isn't loading properly (too much traffic) and no sign of it being in English yet either.

I'm a professional person, just dumb, un-educated and downright thick! So, I'm OK to 2010... aren't I

Confusion regarding daft legislation? Whatever next?
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they come up with some excuse for a delay until end of March 2009 though. There just isn't enough time to do it as they have announced today.
Regarding Brandy on Dubai Eye - firstly, the original announcment some months ago was for locals only and secondly, she is a Kiwi.

Re: ID cards
Apparently government employees are first on the list. All of my husband's office have gone to get them and we are going tomorrow. Luckily it's near airport road carrefour so can do some shopping and hit the boozer whilst there! From what I've heard it's a real developing world rugby scrum with separate lines for everything. Men and women are separated. Will let you all know what happened!

And why was this moved to the sandpit?
It is not idle chit chat, but a legal reality. How utterly stupid.

"EIDA scrambles to cope with rush"
Hundreds of thousands, apparently, contacted the Authority on Wednesday and crashed the web site and call centre.
Usual planning and efficiency in Dubai!
