Best prosecutor means nothing other than convictions secured. How about actual rule of law, precedent and equal treatment of all under law?

It always alarmed and intrigued me in Japan that something like 80% of all convictions are based on confessions. If I was much, much cleverer than I am, I could probably reduce it to an equation with factors of arrest rates (probably quite low), Confuscian / Buddhist / Shintoist influences, persuasive interrogation techniques and most trials being held in-camera. Oh yes, and the fact that an official report (ha!) some time ago found that 92% of all lawyers in Japan cheated on their tax returns: were the other 8% clever enough to hide their misdeeds?

It all comes down to playing the local justice system. Look at that film Law Abiding Citizen...the film is quite far fetched but the theme running through is an interesting one around plea bargaining so the worse of two perpetrators gets less time inside by testifying against the less aggressive / non murdering / non raping perp who ended up with the death sentence.
