That is a stupid statement. Nobody "shits in the street". Yes too many of the very poor have to go to river banks, fields etc. It is a disgrace that after 69 years some still have to do this.

The entire population is one billion+, 50% approx are middle class, and have more en suites than you will ever see in Europe.
Of the rest, the majority will have inside or outside toilets. Those that do not will obviously be in the millions because of the large population.

(The large hut-ment areas in Mumbai for instance have and use open sewers. However previously when the government has rehoused such people in flats, some immediately sell up and go back to the huts.)

This Britain's fault isn't it

Instead of building rocket ships maybe India should look after their own!

What you call "racism" is a 'clinging' to your 'own kind', yes it exists in some!
I have a sister-in -law who thinks people from North Kanara are better than those from South Kanara. She is laughed at! For most it is not serious.

The "poo" myth. I suppose that is because those foreigners going into Mumbai by air --see the hutments, or by train the outlying field sides and think that represents the entire country--. It is a revelation to the majority of Indians travelling there for the first time also!!

UP- is one of India's poorest States. You misread the figures it is 80% of the world not, 80% Indians. As India has one of the largest of world populations obviously the actual numbers are going to be high even if a small percentage.

That's the "myth" that the latest WHO and UNICEF defecation census found that 600 million Indians still crap in the open

If accurate, that means the majority of the billion + do not!
It happens mostly in the the rural areas of the poorist northern States.
How would you have solved the problem given 69 years to recover from 90% poverty?

Hard work, inventiveness, self-awareness. There are several good examples of countries which have developed into world-class economies with a pretty difficult start. And, unfortunately, many more which have pissed it all up against the wall. Religion plays a large part (arguably its the dominant factor), but I'm not entirely sure why India's still so screwed up -- maybe the caste system is just another form of religion.

Putting a few quid into infrastructure over the last 60 years wouldn't have hurt either

Have you seen the number of airports, new motorways, metros, rail tracks etc? The Konkan railway for example.
