Recent reports states that Afghanistan has huge areas of unexploited mineral resources worth between 1 and 3 trillion dollars. The Afghan Government needs to lease out mineral areas for international companies to extract the ores and produce metals. This could provide a good, long-term source of income for the Afghanis, provide much needed income to build up and maintain a 1 million+ national army who would be trained by UN forces.

They do need to spread the wealth though.

A good source of wealth for them today would be Europe and the US buying poppies from them instead of countries like Turkey so the poorer farmers don't take bribes to join the Taliban. Burning their crops won't help matters. Keeping warlords running the place won't help either. It's a crap invasion that doesn't set up a completely favourable leadership for the invaders goals.

Nothing fundamental will change though unless they force secular education upon the entire populace...but that would address the root causes of most of their problems so it's unlikely anyone will do that as it makes sense
