When locals think of Emiratisation, they couldn't possibly envision back breaking blue collar work; for that they will import ,by hook or by crook, a vast indentured servant class. Nah, they are thinking of white collar jobs.

Would the last expat to leave please turn off the lights

I spend around 12k AED a year on fuel. The subsidy in that is around 12k. Then there is the water, free roads, parks, etc. It all adds up. I can't see my small housing fee covering all of that.

How much do you pay in school fees? Or your company on your behalf?

There are "fees", and then there are inflated school and housing fees. And of course "chiller" fees for those living in areas with district cooling

I think the survey did not sufficiently clarify that they meant those expats too. There is the assumption that by 'expats' we mean people who look like us, and not cleaners etc.

Absolutely right. A lot of money is spent on making sure things aren't just slightly better than Amman. A lot of things are a lot better, in fact good enough that we stay and do our jobs. Otherwise there would be a much smaller pool of job applicants to choose from.

Not at all. The population is very very young, growing fast and already suffering 30%+ unemployment.

The Saudi government is extremely concerned about unemployment among the kingdom's young men, and they are trying to implement measures to alleviate the problem and thereby reduce the risk of radicalisation. I'm not sure anyone outside the kingdom actually knows the degree of success being achieved, but there are so many structural problems that success is always going to be limited.

Not forgetting that the arab world extends beyond the GCC and covers 400+ million people. 25% unemployment is about right (and in some countries it is almost 100% for some age groups)
