Hi all, is it just me or when family members come to stay you find that they are a pain in the arse.
The reason why I ask is due to the fact my little sister ( age 31 ) has come to stay for 2 weeks. She has recently split from her boyfriend ( yet another one bites the dust ) and she has took a big redundancy package and wants to do some travelling........first stop my place, as she said she "wants her money to last and does not want to spend ANY MONEY before she moves on to Dubai"
This is her fourth day with me and my son, and she is getting right on our tits She has brought enough clothes for a family of six and has taken over our two bathrooms, we tend to have a couple of items to support my shaving habits, some deodorant, shampoo, soap and toothbrushes. But she, however, has brought half of Boots the chemist with her and set it up on every conceivable flat surface she can find, and possibly wants me to even add some shelving to facilitate the takeover.
The food !! Ok we don’t have a problem coming home to a fridge full of beer, mixed fried rice still from Sunday, ketchup and yesterdays takeaway of Chicken Tikka Masala we’ll be happy as larry in front of the TV with our minimalistic, efficient foodstuffs. She can’t live like that; she wants to have something different every day, and whatever it is, it can’t be plain. It has to be dressed up, special, gourmet. We live in Bahrain their is no gourmet, just food street in Juffair.
I could go on all day about her bloody mobile texting backwards and forwards all bloody evening and night while we are catching up on our TV, or when me and my son have gone to bed we can still hear it beeping a new text message, I am sure it is surgically attached to her hand, and when she could not find it the other night all hell broke lose and she had us all looking for it!!
She called me yesterday to say that I should even sack my maid, whom in her opinion is taking the piss out of me.......I told her that she will go long before my maid goes, and then I came home to find my sister has changed the kitchen around, she’ll completely overhauled the system we had going. Trying to explain to her that we had a system to begin with was a waste of breath, since she promptly explained to me and my laughing son that it wasnt really a system at all and that her way was the right way!!! She then said she had been bored
Any one else had similar problems with family coming to stay or is it just muggins me, and my liberty taking little sis.

She's your younger sister too? Just lay down the law. It's your home. She either abides by how you live or goes and stays elsewhere. I no longer tolerate people messing me around in my home. They get a nicely appointed bedroom, their own bathroom, plenty of food and booze in the house that they are free to help themselves to, but I will not wait on people when I am working.

I find my brother and his wife to be far easier guests then any parents. Mine are annoying and the husband has two sets

There comes a time when even siblings have to have The Talk.

Tell her that you're happy [through gritted teeth] to have her stay for the remaining 10 days in your house, but remind her that it is your house and ask her to put everything back where she found it. If she laughs at you, then tell her that you think she'd be happier in a hotel for the rest of her stay. Simples!

Sounds like a bit of a 'mare. I had to have The Talk with my brother a few years back for the exact opposite reasons.

nope - he was in my house for 2 months and barely managed to put a used glass in the dishwasher, so we'd come home to have to clear up his mess, then cook for him and then do his laundry. He was meant to be looking for a job and in between time doing some DIY for us, but, er... it didn't really work out that way. Still, The Talk kicked him into gear, he got his act together (having moved out) and is a thoroughly lovely chap.

Going to go against the grain - she is only with you for 10 more days....let her be. She has just split up with her boyfriend and been made redundant. She has to feel like crap, even if she is saying she is fine. Both events are pretty awful, even if they were forseen by all around.

Let her take over a bit. She will be gone soon. So she reorganised the kitchen - yes its annoying but not the end of the world.

She is texting - if the noise is annoying then ask her to switch it to silent, but maybe she is getting text support from other friends, helping her through all of this.

Or am I missing something? Sounds like she is a sad sausage who is out of her depth a bit.

Mate, she is one spoilt cow, and she has been engaged more times than BT We all think she has more engagement rings than Ratners
I am giving her space but she never learns. In one respect I want to slap her and tell her to stop being such a blonde, but then she arrives here and thinks its Dubai.......wow was she shocked and has looked down on the place ever since. Still, we are taking her out for a nice meal tonight....Lobster, Champagne the lot and if she moans after that
I will consider selling her for some camels and a nice coldstore.... or any reasonable offers Saudiflares

My sister visited me in Doha in 1996. I have seen her three times since then, and each time World War 3 has threatened to break out. Visiting relatives can be a monumental pain in the bum!
