I disagree with those that defend the mother and criticize the passengers.
Even if the child has mental issues, it's the responsibility of the parent to:
1) keep the child safe. She clearly failed by allowing him to climb on the seats and run up and down the aisle for 8 hours.
2) keep the child from disrupting/disturbing others.
At what point does the child's actions cross a line? Apparently, it's OK for him to climb on the seats, run around the aircraft and scream for 8 hours. Is it OK if he runs up and down the aisle punching or kicking other passengers?
If this is normal behavior for the kid, maybe a sedative would be in order before embarking on an 8-hour journey in confined quarters.
The passenger who filmed it was justified to show evidence to the airline of the incident but not justified in posting it on the web for the whole world to see.

No excuses. IMO the parents totally to blame. I've got two kids, done many flights together. My kids would have got a ****ing slap for ever behaving like that, and a big telling off. My Mrs and me aren't shy when it comes to stuff like that.
To me the parents need a wake up call. If your kids are like that, you physically restrain them and force them to stay in their seats, and to hell with what the kid wants.
Pussy parents.

Furthermore, if someone's kid was sitting on the top of my seat, I would be demanding the parent fix the kid, and if they failed to do that, demand the staff sort it out.

I agree posting such a video on the web of a child is crossing a line.
I travelled a lot with my children with long flights. not easy though I had more control on my children than this mother did- but I dont know all the circumstances to judge the mother. I have been on flights with unruly children, I just take it in stride. People just seem to complain a lot these days.

Training, education, compensation.
This started before the flight left. Had it been an adult behaving that way, they would have been removed. The flight should never have left with such a 'disruptive' passenger.
I would have been pi$$ed to have to put up with that for 8 hours.

Might be instructive to see what Ppruners make of this.

According to the numerous sites which has this video and a huge amount of commentary from readers - and a few from people actually on the plane - this was not a tantrum caused by anger or frustration over a particular incident.
The child was already making noises such as screaming from the moment he entered the plane, and continued to do so for the whole of the flight. The fact that he did not utter verbal communications throughout the flight indicates that this was the child's usual method of behaviour or communication.
Several medical professionals who have commented said that, for the child's safety and well being, knowing that he would be confused and unhappy during an 8 hour flight, which would increase his likelyhood of screaming and inability to remain seated, he should have been medicated.
Apparently mother did little to remedy this behaviour; in addition, the airlines staff did nothing to help either - just disappeared into their little areas and ignored the situation even when the child was on the seats banging on the overhead bins.

Intolerant - possibly...
I was once an hour into a 14 hour flight, quietly munching on some nuts and quaffing a red wine, when the person in front of me told me i had to put my nuts down and stop eating them as he had a nut allergy.
I told him in no uncertain way, that if he was incapable of being on the plane in its normal usage he shouldnt have boarded, and i asked him if he had declared this allergy to the airline? He said no, no doubt because they would have denied him boarding.
Tear in eye he bleated to the cabin crew, and was summarily escorted from business class never to be seen again. However i was told that plebean class was asked not to consume their own nuts [i assume they dont get airline nuts? Savory biccies i seem to remember]
Hooray for singapore air!

The Parents should have assured the Child's privacy and prevented his 5 minutes of YouTube fame.

I tried to look it up on YouTube- saw one video saying the passenger was "traumatized", the poor snowflake ! And the child's screams ( which were obnoxious) as "demonic".
I am curious why there such a need for "safe zones" these days and people seem to have so many "traumas", and such outrage over terms or political opinions they don't agree with. The same people probably object to parents swatting their kids once in a while !

My kid has behavioural issues. I've been that parent, on a plane, putting up with the looks, the judgements, the comments from strangers - those who think my son is 'demonic', or has mental health issues, or that his medical notes should be public knowledge.
Parenting is the hardest thing anyone can do. Parenting a kid like mine is even harder. When he's tantruming and being violent, I hate his behaviour. I hate him. It's hard not to be sucked into the chaos - to try and teach him to manage emotions, to be calm. I'm lucky that I can tag team with Mr GG - how parents do this alone, I have no idea. That allows me time to see how much he's hurting, how overwhelmed he is, how hard it is for him. And then I give myself grief - I'm a terrible parent, I'm failing him, he's hurting and I hate him for it. So I pep talk myself - I'm doing the best I can, with the resources I have. I don't believe it, but it's the time I need to regroup, put my game face on and go back for round two. I do that every day, often multiple times a day. That's our life.
And I wouldn't change it, or him, for the world. So I put up with the looks, the judgements, the comments. Because sometimes, as in this thread, you get empathy and understanding and it gives you hope that it's going to be okay. A little kindness goes a bloody long way.
