Well I'm sad to hear Mancity isn't enjoying life in the UK because for us it's absolutely brilliant.

We arrived back six weeks ago and hubby got a job one week later, earning far more than in Oz, daughters are working/college and I got a job on Thursday (the only one I applied for). We've been out for a lovely day today up to the beautiful Lake District and enjoyed walking out in the lovely scenery in the lovely sunshine. Families were out walking and riding bikes together, people out boating. We had to stop so many times because so many people wanted to stop and chat. We get far more for our money here, more choice, better shops, more things to do in general.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes but really, to say that the whole of the UK is crap and going to the dogs is just a complete nonsense. It's a beautiful country with some lovely people and so many opportunities for those who want to get on.

Everyone keeps going on about hoodies everywhere - well in some of the cities and towns there are hoodies. But most of the time, these are just teenagers hanging out together. Not all hoodies are criminals for goodness sakes. It's a fashion. Like we had fashion when we were teenagers. Yes some them do mug and happy slap etc. But personally I haven't seen any more crime here than when I lived in Oz. The only difference here is that the newspapers and news channels revel in it. In Australia it still happened but didn't get the same coverage.

And has anyone anywhere ever had a good word to say about ANY government. Because I'm 43 and as far back as I can remember all I've ever heard is complaints and whining about whichever government is in power. Everything is blamed on "The Government". It seems to be our national passtime

for some moving back works for some it doesn't. I hated being back in England after 4 years away and couldn't wait to leave and I will never return not even for a visit. Others pick up where they left off. Not everyone will see the same UK you do Mancity.

Sorry to hear your return hasn't worked out for you mancity!!

I think that's all our fears if we return, will we be like i hate it get me back to oz or im so glad to be home, that's why you really have to stay a while here to see if you settle.

We are having a trip home at xmas so that's going to give us some insight to see if we really are missing it as much as we think only time will tell!!

good luck with your return

what - you mean you managed to get out of your house, drive to the Lake district in your unvandalised car, walk around without climbing over piles of stinking litter and rubbish, and safely navigate your way home again using British roadsigns and not having been mugged at knifepoint by a dole-cheating, heroin using polish illegal immigrant???

well - what will the Daily Mail say!

Glad you're enjoying the UK Louise - its not for us but everyone will have where they are happiest.

Life is great isn't it? The weather has been absolutely beautiful, the people are lovely and friendly and there is so much to see and do here. I'm sure some people just drive around the crapest rubbish places they can possibly find for some odd reason. We spend nearly a week driving around the South before we went to Oz and it was just lovely - beautiful English towns and villages at their best, oozing with character, didn't spot any hoodies, rubbish or vandalism whatsoever. I'm not saying that these don't exist anywhere because they quite obviously do. But it irritates me when people paint a picture of the whole of the UK as being a cesspit - it has good and bad places the same as other countries.

Glad you are still enjoying life here too Thunderbird. The only downside for us at the minute is that we are doing so much, the time is going far too quickly - can't belive we are in April already!

Don't think the Daily Mail would say anything Islandmom - they never print anything positive

April already I know. we just off to seaworld then dinner. planning bealieu nxt week and a weekend away. My son in perth just informed me he taking flying lessons!!. All the trouble and stress i found in perth has been made worthwhile as he is able to get his citizenship and seems happy for now. All seems to have fallen into place, my blood pressure has almost dropped to normal now. I hope my son visits other places in oz so i can visit him there, i have seen enough of perth. tho the wages will make it difficult for him. I have booked a holiday to thailand next feb so may tie in a visit to see him then. my annual trip to majorca with the guys for golf has been booked and a week or 2 away somewhere in europe will be sorted soon for summer. I went to london friday to see about setting up an office in harley st, it was different, whilst in a maccy dees i sneezed and a young girl worker there blessed me as she walked past. she didnt mug me or offer drugs. off to seaworld now, 5 min drive away, now wheres my shades.

a well done to both of you!!
this week, ive been back a year. its flown by!

i have this take on people that talk about all the obnoxious people in England. I believe that whatever personality type you are, you attract a certain personality type. Assuming everyone has friends....I am assuming no-one would say, "all my friends are chavs, thieves, illegals, etc etc" So the people that say this is what the countries full of can be one of 2 things...
Either they have no friends, so kinda wierd and not to be trusted or, are the type that say "me and my network are ok, its all them others" All what others? If they dont socialise with these people, how do they meet them/interact with them etc. (maybe a 3rd option-they are lying!) Or do they just ASSUME because they want to live in another country they have to justify the move by exaggerating the bad. They cant have it both ways. If its overrun with crime, do you know these criminals? If you dont, its not so full of them then that you cant carve you own life/niche away from this.
If really, all you see are bad things in people and have deluded yourself that this is some sort of epidemic, get out smell the roses and look at the good people. When you do that, the bad seem less.
Im not on cloud cuckoo land. I know there are places in the UK (as well as in Oz) I would be scared to live. But I also know there are substantially more places where I know i would feel safe, trusted and happy. Is your glass half full or half empty?
And no, im not saying this because ive got to justify my move back. In fact Im not 100% sure i wont go back to Oz or stay. Whatever I do though, it will have nothing to do with England going to the dogs. It will always have the best personalities and humour and sense of justice than anywhere else i know.
Those of you coming back -it is possible to be happy here. honest

Totally agree with you here. Someone close to me didn't want us to emigrate to Oz in the first place, so never stopped telling us about the beautiful UK and all it had to offer. Circumstances changed and that person wanted us to stay (and now return) to Oz so now just one year later, the UK is the worst place on the planet Funny how a country can change so much in one short year

Weird - I didn't want to socialise with the thieves that stole my son's stereo from his car in the middle of the night. I didn't want lunch with the idiot on top of the Ford Fiesta roof as him and his mates sped past playing children at about 50 mph in a residential area. I didn't want to send a birthday card to the scrote who left a bottle of urine on my lawn.......just a week of living in a 'nice' part of the UK.

I'm not saying it's all bad but who is not awake and smelling the coffee here?
