Don't think I've ever heard anyone whinging about Bruce Forsyth - perhaps somewhat embarrassed eye rolls in a similar way to people give to their dad after an especially good (or is that bad) "dad joke".

Re: What makes Britain Great?
The actual answer to what makes "Great Britain" great is that it is the largest island in the British Isles. Great Britain is the name of the island that comprises England, Scotland and Wales. It's interesting that everyone assumes that "Great" refers to prowess, success or some aspect of national identity rather than just an adjective to describe the island relative to the other islands in the British isles.

Found this, not sure of the source..........
The name Britain descends from the Latin name for Britain, Brittania or Britt?nia, the land of the Britons. Great Britain came into use when Geoffrey of Monmouth in c. 1136 referred to the island of Great Britain as Britannia major Greater Britain, to distinguish it from Britannia minor Lesser Britain”.
......... or where Lesser Britain is or was.

I have no interest in a history lesson, can we restrict conversation to what you find Great about Britain please
Having just returned from a wonderful meal at one of the village pubs I must reiterate food AND pubs

Once a thread is started it has a life of its own.. one takes the rough with the smooth. Plus, history lessons are not off topic, since pedantry and obscurantism are one of the things that makes Britain great.

based on number of member countries, not actual size before someone attempts to out-pedant me ...

Re: What makes Britain Great?
Speaking of pedantry - this thread should be 'What makes the United Kingdom great'. I know it takes away the clever play on words but by saying Great Britain, you're only talking about 75% of the greatness*

I trump on your pedantry.
Oh yeah, a weird and whacky idea of what constitutes humour is also what makes Britain Great (and makes the United Kingdom United).
