Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs
So I guess I will go on record as being the only one to have liked it - even the ending

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs
Loved Happy Valley. Will there be a new series? Can't remember. Both Happy Valley and The Missing persuaded the OH to watch Broadchurch, which he had not wanted to do back when I watched it. So I get to watch it again

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs
I enjoy crime dramas but the depraved, cruel, and downright miserable is too often the currency of drama at the moment.
I was watching Goggle Box last week and they were showing people watching the old Morecambe and Wise shows (for anyone who hasn't seen Goggle Box, it is a fly-on-the-wall show about people sitting at home watching telly. Sounds weird but in fact it can be very entertaining).
Anyway, the Google Box audience were without exception laughing their heads off at M&W's silliness. Just goes to show you don't have to be overly "clever" to entertain people.

I do find a lot of British TV to be like this these days. Not enough light-hearted entertainment, IMO.

His scripts are funny and heartwarming and I know people would like them - but it seems stuff has to be grim to get on TV now.
I like Last Tango in Halifax because it actually shows the North as it really is, not as some dour, grey, hopeless wasteland.
And I too love Gogglebox. What a fun show! My favourites are the Siddiqi family (spelling?), Scarlett and the gay guy who sits on the left. Oh and the posh drunks!

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs
My friend is a writer and he's often asked to go to week-long writing sessions at the BBC. At the end of the week, they invariably tell him that his work just isn't 'gritty' enough but please keep trying because they do like his style.

Yes, "gritty", I see that term used a lot in TV reviews as a compliment.
I hope your friend has more luck as there are lots of people who would appreciate that sort of writing. Like a lot of things, I think the people at the top in TV are out of touch with real people.
Programs like Last Tango deal with human frailty and aren't just flimsy fluff, but they manage to deal with human problems in a very heart-warming way. They don't make you lose faith in humanity - but programs like The Missing and The Fall seem to have that as their raison d'etre!

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs
That's in my "for later" stuff too.
There does seem an absence of stuff like the Beiderbecke Trilogy, Underworld, Peculiar Practice and the other stuff we had in the 80s and 90s.
