Re: Anyone leaving Canada?
Ah now i know why you are such a miserable bugger. When I speak of Vancouver i tend to omit the metro areas and think only of Vancouver proper. The reasons I enjoy living here don't really apply out of the city. I have zero desire to live out of the city with the exception of one or two places. The experince of living in metro vancouver's burbs is completely different to the lifestyle of living in the city. I find life, for the most part, deathly dull out in the burbs.
I too met a Canadian and ended up here by chance. We actually met in San Diego when I worked for the cruise lines. I knew very little about Canada and even less if anything about BC/Vancouver. Funny how life conspires against you. The prospects of a crap job, low pay and a house in Coquitlam would not be overly appealing to me and would defeat the reasons that I enjoy living here. I would rather rent downtown than own out in the burbs. Easy for me to say since I only have me to worry about.

You live in Coquitlam???!!!
Okay that explains a lot. Dude. say no more. I get it. I too have that sense of soul-crushing banality when I get too far from the old, established neighbourhoods...I love where I live...I would not be singing van's praises if I lived in the 'Lam or Pomo, etc. No. I know some people love the new Stepford developments but I am not one of them. Nor do I like strip malls etc.
Do you think you'll be able to return to the UK or is OH against?

I live in Cap Hill/Van Heights. It's great there. There's pretty much everything I could want walking distance from my house, plus nice views of the north shore...and not too far from DT.

It actually can be pretty beautiful out here. I had a really nice day today and really took in the views and appreciated that it is pretty. But really, it's a bit like saying I love central London and want to move there , but end up living in Bromley or Barnet. Nowt wrong with those areas, but it ain't the reason you'd move there.
Why don't you rent where you want to live and rent out your current place? Might help if you're stuck here for the forseeable.

They truly are some people's heaven. They love life there and would hate to live closer in to a city right up against other houses, with traffic outside the door and a small garden.
We lasted about a year in a lovely suburb then ran away screaming to a down-town fringe neighbourhood that felt alive.
So it depends what you like, but if you're in a suburb and going nuts, can you try somewhere else?
Mind you, we're still going back to the UK. Stuff ships this weekend.

Thanks guys, you managed to knock my rose tinted off for a while. Been pee'd off recently and the minds been wandering back to sitting on the beach and wandering down Lonsdale for cheap sushi.

Re: Anyone leaving Canada?
On this forum a lot of the people moving back to the uk seem to be coming from Australia. Are there any unhappy people leaving Canada?
We have been in Canada for four months and although its a great lifestyle for the kids and where we are is low in crime and a great place to raise kids, we are finding it tough. In all honesty its all a bit dull. The canadians i have met and socialise are very nice people, but i'm craving some good old British banter, and am starting to feel more homesick as times go on.
If i could transfer all the area has to offer for amenities and activities and deposit it in the beautiful yorkshire Dales (where we came from) it would be fab!!
Just interested if there are any other expats in Canada feel the same way?

Yes. I came to North Vancouver with my boyfriend 3 years ago and we now have a little Canadian of our own. I started to miss home about 6 months in and have been up and down ever since. We're going to apply for citizenship next month which takes up to 15 months to go through and I'm giving myself that time to decide whether to return or not because I want to be sure that returning is the right thing for us (my boyfriend would prefer to stay here). It's a hard decision but if I still feel the same way after 4 years I can't see it changing. I'm watching that ITV series 'No Place Like Home' with interest.

BTW defo get your citizenship. As i was saying above i do miss it from time to time and we intend to return at some stage. Its also peace of mind knowing you can go back if you feel like it. It might be the thing that makes you happier in the UK if you do return.

Best part of Van is N Van. I lived on W19th near the blockbuster for nearly 7 years. If you do come back could you bring Lonsdales sushi restaurants and roastmaster please. Tks

So true about teh sushi. I spent 6 weeks in the UK in 2007 and craved sushi - what they were trying to pass off as sushi in manchester put me right off.

Thanks, that's good to know. We don't meet the requirements until next month so I've not really looked into getting citizenship in great detail yet but I'll check that out.

Re: Anyone leaving Canada?
You will have to take the citizenship test in Canada and also attend the citizenship ceremony in person. So two trips to Canada, possibly on short notice. If you are living outside of Canada you may also be interviewed by a citizenship judge to determine suitability and intentions.

NO!
and I have not read all 5-pages of these threads, just the first post captured me as typical

and after what 4-5 months & I'll bet for all the wrong reasons you couldn't wait to get away from Blighty at the first chance
I say give it a go & stick it out at least 2-years (no hols back in between either) & then see how you feel

same goes for any immigrant or those that return back to the UK

Awe, are you just homesick?

We didn't leave the uk for all the typical wrong reasons, a business oppurtunity came up for my husband that we would have been crazy not to take up- so far this is turning out well. We also all have (except hubby) citizenship making it easier to go We will be giving it a couple years as the business has build up and establish itself.
I appreciate that people advise not to go back for a couple years - we have a lot of family in the uk that we will be visiting in the next 6 months, two years is too long for us and our kids not to see them.
There were things that we didn't like about the uk but the same goes here, i happened to love the area we came from. I am viewing this as if it works out and we are all happy as a family then we will stay, if not as a family we would be happy back where we were.
