HMS Vanguard exploded with the loss of 800+ lives.

I think you will find that this disaster was a consequence of a magazine explosion unrelated to enemy action. Back in the day a number of warships had magazine mishaps ( accidents) resulting in total destruction of the warships involved and a heavy loss of life.
