International Living has been pushing Ecuador as their number one place to retire to for the last few years. I guess they may have to review their recommendation after the earthquake.
The risk of natural disaster should perhaps weigh more heavily in the selection of a retirement destination. As far as I know, Malaysia (and Penang in particular) are quite low risk for such cataclysmic events.

Tsunamis can hit anywhere but, thankfully, only a rare occurrence.
Malaysia is not prone to major earthquakes. Only once felt something. In Penang, I think it was about 2011, there was a big 'un in Sumatra and we all felt it in Penang. I was up the far end of a high-rise in Tg Tokong at the time with mr bb and was watching my coffee moving all of it's own accord, thinking that's damn strange, then whooooo, the building was swaying.
It happens quite a lot in Singapore in the high-rises I believe (according to friends) though doesn't get reported too much in the Sing press

Don’t worry exreg
1) Get a hearing aid for your earie
2) Take partner up to your eyrie
3) Take off partner’s clothes (if you’re wearing them)
4) Check slowly all over for tremors and earth moving
5) If still nothing, that’s definitely eerie

Hahaha.....I've too much respect for JC3s satirical wit to try to provoke him....go JC.
Anyway...I'm in a crap hotel in KL with lousy internet. We gave up our MM2H today and tried to check into Melia without a reservation, but they are redecorating some rooms and full. The concierge directed us to around the corner to this dump... but my wife so tired we checked in and will leave early tomorrow back to Bali.

But good point. Now that would be eerie.

PS. Take that apron off.
PPS. At Christmas, her husband is something a wife does not want to find in her stockings.
