Default Cancer - how it works in Penang

Another write-up I did for another place. If you have any experiences that you wish to share, or any questions, just add to this topic.

CANCER – HOW IT WORKS IN PENANG

Despite the dread of the word Cancer, these days the majority of different cancers are curable, especially if caught in the early stages.

Many of the hospitals in Penang will have an Oncology Department which deals with various types of cancer. Typically, if it’s discovered that you have cancer (possibly found by another department), that department will refer you to the Oncology Department for consultation, scans and a programme of treatment.

Usually, if radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy is deemed to be beneficial, this will take place at one of the specialist cancer centres in Penang, and overseen by the Oncologist that you have consulted with. He will draw up a programme of treatment consulting with the specialists at whichever centre or hospital you go to.

The two main specialist cancer centres are Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital and Pantai Hospital. Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre also has a cancer unit. There is a dedicated cancer centre currently being built at Adventist Hospital. This unit will have a tie-in with the National Cancer Centre in Singapore. The National Cancer Centre in Singapore is well known in the south-east Asia region for treatment of cancer including complex surgeries. I’m not sure when this centre will be complete but they are certainly getting well stuck in with the building of it at the moment.

Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital is a “not for profit” specialist cancer hospital in Fettes Park in the north of Penang island. Patients are normally referred to Mount Miriam via other Penang hospitals. The hospital is equipped with three linear accelerators for radiation therapy including IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) which is an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy which involves fewer side effects than conventional radiation therapy. The hospital also has a chemotherapy department, as well as its own PET-CT scanner.
