Hi everyone,

My first post here. I am moving from UK to Brazil next month and plan to buy a new TV before I go because they are multiples more expensive in Brazil.
However, other than the power socket, are there any other considerations when it comes to the TV working and picking up local broadcasts?

There used to be a distinction between PAL and SECAM. One was used in "The New World" and one here. I hope someone who knows will be along soon to help you out.

Pal has several flavours but is broadly europe, ntsc is america north and south, and secam is france [because they are different] and anyone who was a colony of those 3 tends to use it too.

Modern flatscreen tv’s generally use ntsc or pal with no issue and spit on the french, though secam works on some.

However those are all analogue systems, tv is becoming digital, we consume tv now as on a pc, which most SMART tv’s do well, though some are smarter than others, personally samsung all the way.

PAL/NTSC/SECAM differences are less important now than digital broadcast standards. The UK uses DVB-T; Brazil uses ISDB-Tb. If your new TV isn't compatible with the latter than you will need some kind of receiver box to view digital broadcast TV.

Or just forget the local tv, so long as you can get decent broadband use iptv, netflix bbc iplayer or whatever you fancy - viewed typically via vpn on an ipad or laptop and thrown onto the tv screen in one of several ways - its the most powerful and versatile way to go.

Absolutely - i actually find only watching downloaded or streamed content a great time saver - i only watch 1 or 2 hours a day pre bed if im in, zero adverts, and what i really want to watch.

Have you ever seen red dwarf - the BTL episode [thats not a pig sandwich, its when they get immersed into the better than life video game and forget to eat...]

DON'T. You cannot get TV's in the UK compatible with the Brazilian standard ISDB-T
