Children born in Ireland or Northern Ireland after the enabling legislation is passed will be Irish citizens automatically if at least one parent is:
- an Irish citizen; or
- a British citizen; or
- a permanent resident of Ireland or the UK; or
- has lived legally (although not on a student visa or awaiting an asylum claim determination) in Ireland or Northern Ireland for 3 years in the 4 years preceding the child's birth.

Re: Ireland votes to change citizenship law
The necessary legislation has now been passed by the Irish Parliament and the Irish government has announced it will commence on 1 January 2005.
No child born before that date will be affected by the new law.
