Foreign Birth Registration/Citizenship
 

Has anyone been through the process of obtaining Irish citizenship through descent.

I'm a UK national but have paternal grandparents on my father's side so I do qualify. I have just started ordering birth certificates etc and wondered what is actually needed - is it just the certs on my father's side going back to my Irish grandparents or do i also need my English mother's birth cert and their marriage cert (i already have their decree nisi).

Any assistance would be really welcome.

You'll need a full birth certificate for yourself, with parents names, rather than the shortened version that we usually keep in the UK. It's easily ordered online. Your parents marriage certificate might be needed too.

I applied for the Foreign Birth Registry in January this year, from the US. I supplied birth, marriage, and death certificates for my mother and grandfather, my long form birth certificate, 2 passport photos, copies of a bank statement, utility bill, and government tax bill, all with current addresses. I had one of the docs at work co-sign my paperwork. All this was mailed directly to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Dublin (overseas registered mail using Fedex or UPS is criminally expensive!).

Not a word from anyone for 4 months. Then two weeks ago, my FBR certificate, all my original docs, and a APS2E form arrived in the mail. I've now used the APS2E to apply for a passport, which I had to mail to the Irish Embassy since I live in Washington DC. For passports, there's an online tracking system. I'm guessing I should see the passport in about 6 weeks. Éirinn go Brách!
