Cheapest way of getting from England to Ireland with a car over Christmas?
Hi all,
We're spending Christmas in Ireland (hopefully, subject to Covid permitting). I'm trying to book a car ferry from England and it's rather expensive. Anyone got any tips as to the cheapest route with a car? The Stena routes via Holyhead and Fishguard are £500+...flights are out, and we don't want to hire a car.

The official Irish government rules say people from Britain "SHOULD" not travel to Ireland, but it doesn't say they CANNOT. Is it possible to travel anyway (assuming in good faith the circumstances justify this) or would someone be turned away at the ferry port if not deemed suitable travel?

Sounds like a 'wait and see' thing.
The Irish Government has announced they are banning flights from Great Britain for 48 hours from midnight on Sunday 20 December, and that people should not travel to Ireland from Great Britain by air or sea. The flight ban will remain in place for Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December, and will be reviewed on Tuesday 22 December. It affects people in Great Britain regardless of nationality. Essential supply chain workers are exempt (see ‘Entry rules in response to coronavirus’ below). Ferry crossings between Ireland and Great Britain will continue for freight but not passengers. If you were due to travel to or from Ireland please contact your travel operator. Further updates will be published when they are available.

In Scotland we have heard the plea from Anglos, "We do not have to follow your rules : We are English !" I am sure that Jingoists travelling to Ireland come out with the same BS.
