Back to the "Good old Days"
I remember that prior to joining the European Union we would get the boat back from Ireland to the UK following our holidays. On arrival having spent 9 hours on the wretched boat we would be queueing up to go through customs. Each suitcase was put on a long table and opened then inspected and anything deemed to be in excess of allowance would be removed (Whisky was a favourite). I think fear this experience awaits us once again. No more to breeze through the nothing to declare channel.

I suspect a good many UK citizens returning from EU countries WILL be stopped and have bag searches, because of the changes in what you can bring in they will be wanting to see if people haven't realised there have been changes.

The Common Travel Area does not relate to the import of goods and services.

Ireland to France is purely EU, but it's only a Schengen border. Passport controls are in place, but it's still free movement.
