This gets to the heart of the question: Does "pretty" meant the
city itself, its archtecture, public gardens and parks, etc., or
the city in its setting. Tucson is certainly not stunningly
beautiful (save some isolated areas, many of them technically
outside the city), but much of the setting for Tucson is
beautiful.

Maybe, but it's turned its river into a "Sanitary and Ship Canal", it
has no relief,
and there's that damn beach.

I believe Vancouver and San Francisco are the tops in this poll, but
here in the south, some of our prettiest towns have something those
cities don't have, beautiful blooming azalea bushes, dogwood trees,
spanish moss draped over live oak trees and alligators. My pick are
these cities:
1) Charleston, SC
2) Savannah, Georgia
3) Wilmington, North Carolina

Have you ever been to Vancouver in the spring? I doubt it's significantly
different from Seattle, where I live. Here dogwoods and rhododendrons
(cousins of azaleas) are native. The residential neighborhoods are full of
blooming fruit trees, bulbs, rhodies and azaleas, white and pink dogwoods,
roses, etc. Yards are relatively large and mostly not fenced or walled in,
so passersby can enjoy the highly landscaped gardens. We took a trip to
Savannah and Charleston one spring and were somewhat disappointed in the
gardens. Azaleas definitely grew impressively high, but there wasn't a great
variety of flowering plants.

I especially remembering some very nice parks in Vancouver, with lots of
blooming plants. The Pacific Northwest is one of the great gardening
climates in the world, able to grow many of the plants developed in England.

But you're right. Absolutely no alligators.

Did you go to Middleton Plantation or Magnolia Gardens in Charleston? I
have never been to the Pacific northwest but if anything if any prettier
than our southeast, I sure would to go there.

Yes, we went to Middleton Plantation. I have to say that Charleston is a
very pretty town. I like the homogeneity of house design in the old parts.
And it's on a point between two rivers, nice siting.

But Vancouver is between two larger bodies of water and has snow-capped
mountains in the background. Maybe I should add the Fraser River too.
Seattle also sits between 2 large bodies of water, in addition to assorted
lakes within the city, and with snow-capped mountains to the east and west.

More analytically, some cities are pretty because of their setting. Some
cities/towns are nicely laid out and have interesting architecture. A few
places combine both, San Francisco for one, Boston for another.

Personally, I really like watery cities. Venice is my favorite (urban) spot
in the world.

That's about as watery as you can get on this planet.

What do you mean those cities don't have.................... ?

Coastal Mt in BC and the area around Vancouver are one of the worlds
great Rhodo and Azaeala growing regions -- many of which are in bloom
right now.
Also, the Pacific dogwood is the Provincial emblem ( tree) and grows
wild all over the place. Every other kind of dogwwod, including the
pink flowering Florida and cream Cornus Kousa also grows in abundance.

Vancouver doesn't have the same Spanish Moss as the cities that you
mention but all on ehas to do is get out of the city proper into the
great westcoast rainforest and try hacking through the moss

Without a doubt in my mind, the prettiest town in North America is Old
Quebec City.

Next in line for me is Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

The United Nations has recognized both of these as well and declared
them the only 2 "International Cities" in North America.

Another town of notable mention is Niagara-on-the-Lake just north of
Niagara Falls.

And, no, I am not a Canadian. I hail from the also beautiful city of
San Diego, CA.

Old Quebec City in winter mixes the best of old world beauty with North
American geography. No other city in the world compares to old Quebec
over Christmas and New Years' IMHO.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a gorgeous community as well, but it is very
very tiny. Its limited to a very small number of streets. I do confess
to visiting it every other year or so, I just try to leave my bankbook
at home since the stores are very very (very) high end.

Not having travelled most of the southern US I confess my choices for
beautiful are very limited, but I'll vollunteer the following:
Most beautiful cities: Vancouver (spring/summer), Quebec City
(fall/winter).
Most beautiful towns: #1 vote is Whiterock BC, followed by Banff
Springs, Jasper, and Canmore (all in Alberta). Whiterock is a gorgeous
seaside town right on the border with the US, gets 50% of the rain that
Vancouver gets but is only 90 minutes away. Has a very southern
France/Brighton feel as a seaside town, lots of restaurants and
gorgeous scenery.

Ontario has quite a few 'quaint' small towns as well I can volunteer
from personal experience.

Fergus is similar to an 18th century european town built around a mill,
and it hosts Ontario's Highland Games in the summer. The town square
had a very old-world feel, with the river running through it and all of
the stone buildings.

Kleinberg is threatened with Toronto urban sprawl, but is very quaint
and hosts the McMichael Art Gallery (Group of 7, quintessential
Canadian painters).

Finally, Belfountain in Caledon is required viewing in fall...the Forks
of the Credit offer the best fall colours in southern Ontario.

On a good day Fergus, Kleinberg and Belfountain all can compete with
the Banffs and Jaspers and Whiterocks of the world, but they lack the
geopgrahy that makes the later examples so unique.

My $0.02.
