How do I get to Billings MO from Edmonton/Calgary?

How do I get to Billings MO from Edmonton/Calgary?
I will be visiting the Stampede and will call into our Edmonton office
for some work, before heading to Billings to visit some friends. This
will be my first visit to NA. It appears the only fights go via
Seattle, Denver or Salt Lake City, would prefer to not waste time back
tracking all over the country. Is there an option I'm missing?

Billings is a pretty small place with limited service
so you pretty much have to fly via a hub, going via
Seattle isnt that bad
You could probably go overland by car or
bus but it'd take longer.

You're not missing anything. Montana isn't exactly near anywhere except N.
and S. Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho. All together, they aren't exactly any
airline's first choice for direct flights.
Your shortest connections - and I think you need to look at this as the
total time to get there, not whether you back-track or end up farther away -
will be through Denver or Seattle.

About a 12 hour drive (not including stops)
Hwy 2 to Fort Macleod;
Hwy 3 to Lethbridge;
Hwy 4 to border/Interstate 15 after border;
15-BI to US 87;
or 5 - 6 hours in flights and connection waits.
(do you need a car in Billings?)

Not really... Billings is a pretty small place, so there isn't a huge amount
of choice:

I'd fly into St. Louis and rent a car. It's a nice drive. If you fly
into Springfield you are going to be paying $200 for the ticket.
Billings is a nice little Missouri town. I go through there a lot.
Not much to see though.
