Default Cities in U.S. notorious for crime?

We are a young married Swedish couple, coming to the states for the
first time, one month. Which are cities most to avoid for crime?
We know about gangs in Los Angeles and also bad crime in Washinton D.C.

I would say avoid Newark but probably you're not planning to visit there
(we forgive you).

I wouldn't avoid any cities because of crime. Instead, chooes cities that
seem interesting, and then exercise appropriate common sense.

In very few cases is the crime in interesting areas.

If you visit Los Angeles for 3 months your chances of seeing any gang
activity are considerably less than seeing a total eclipse of the sun.
Apologies to the media, but, it isn't a matter of even the slightest
concern. You're much more likely to be involved in an automobile accident
in Sweden or the United States than to see any gang activity in Los
Angeles, even if you go looking for it. KM

Well... New York and Los Angeles and Rio are the most notorious cities
for crime, I think. You said U.S. so just ignore my adding Rio, next...
New York is much better now, as one person already pointed out, but of
course New York still has super high crime. L.A. is fine on its West
Side, but the entire South and East parts are completely overrun with
gangs.

Not long ago it was what, 70th on a list of crime in US cities. That put it
behind (i.e., safer than) pretty much any city that most people could name.

Philly & Boston also, Chicago is not safe either. HOWEVER, these cities
have INTERESTING places, very interesting. L.A. has interesting places
but you have to live there for at least a year, in the basin part of the
city, to "get" L.A. and it's bizzare attitude.

Uhhh...I don't know where you've been for the last five years. New York is now the safest big city in the U.S., so your comment is incorrect. Crime isn't that bad.

In general, crime in the U.S. is more localized (i.e. among those who live a certain lifestyle) and really isn't that random. For example, L.A. has a horrible crime rate, but almost all the crime is gang related and you won't even notice these sorts of problems if you visit the city and avoid those areas.

Here are some sities with a bad reputation:

Detroit (very dangerous)
Atlanta (avoid downtown at night)
Cincinatti
Dallas
Houston
New Orleans
Los Angeles
Miami
St. Louis (very dangerous)
Philadephia
Newark
Washington, D.C.
Baltimore
Chicago
Gary, Indiana
Oakland, California
Tampa, Florida

Yeah, that's a lot of cities, but most crime is really in certain areas and among those who live that lifestyle. Some cities like Atlanta, D.C., St. Louis and especially Detroit are really bad. I find it funny that so many people move to Atlanta.

Boston is considered a safe city, but it has a much higher crime rate than people know. Just like New York has a much lower crime rate than people know.

Crime in the U.S. is overrated. It's not so random as it is in other countries. I'm from Canada originally and have been mugged up there, but have never had problems since moving to the U.S. And Canada is supposed to be a safer country, right? Don't believe everything the media says...I know the European and Canadian media loves to paint the U.S. in the worst light as possible.

I have been living in the LA area for past 5 yrs..actually the gang
activity as someone pointed out is concentrated in the south central
LA and East LA neighbourhoods. I live in Burbank ( San Fernando Valley
) and its one of the safest places. Even in SFV there are some parts
of N Hollywood / Van Nuys etc which are rough neighbourhoods...But why
are u so bothered about crime rather than spots to visit in these
cities ? Every big city has violence and crime. No big deal. Travel
with a positive attitude and always assume there are good people
everywhere ( which is true ). Isnt variety the spice of life ? Isnt
risk taking a thrill in itself? World is so beautiful it is worth
fighting for.

All cities have areas where crimes are frequent.

All cities have areas where crimes are infrequent.

Visit any city you like. Just be aware of where the areas of high crime are
and avoid them.

Also be aware that crimes can occur in areas which are usually relatively
safe. Your best bet is usually sticking to the tourist areas where there
are many people, but you should always follow reasonable precautions and be
aware of your surroundings wherever your are.

Enjoy your trip.

There is no such city which you can avoid for crime. The current sniper
incident happens around Washington DC, but not in the city. So anywhere in
the world you go there is crime, even in Sweden.

I agree that there are no big cities anywhere in the world with no crime.
I would add that any city with alot of tourists will try hard to minimize
crime in tourist areas. Still, some basic precautions are worth taking,
like avoiding dark alleys late at night and not carrying large amounts of
money in your back pocket.

Also, many more tourists are killed or injured in accidents than in
crimes. Tourists are often unfamiliar with foreign streets, leading to
auto accidents. Tourists are also unfamiliar with nature, leading to
ocean drownings, falling off cliffs, etc. People want to be care free on
their vacations, but some basic attention to your surroundings can
improve safety alot.

There are certain areas of various cities that you really don't want to
go to. Cities have their safe and unsafe areas.

In New York, it's (or used to be) generally Manhattan north of 96th
avenue (lower on the west side), "south central" Los Angeles, San
Franciso south of Market/west of Castro, south east Washington D.C.,
south Boston, North or West Philadelphia. Just be aware of your
surroundings as in conditions of cars and houses in the area, and litter
on the street. Grubbier things are, the more likely the neighnourhood
isn;t very safe.

I live in Baltimore, Maryland and it is supposed to be one of the highest crime cities. Sure there are bad parts (east Baltimore), but that is an isolated area. You will find in every city there is a "bad part", and that is not isolated to USA, it is all over the world. I have been to San Francisco 3 times, NYC 4 times, DC about 5 times, Virginia, Niagara Falls, Carolina, Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe (north California) 2 times and Philadelphia 3 times. I have never encountered and problems anywhere. If you stick to the tourist areas and don't walk down any dark alleys at night (or during the day) you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If you are going to come on a trip, don't have worries about crime on your mind or you will not enjoy yourself. Just come on over and relax and enjoy the sights and the different culture.
BTW other that this bastard sniper (which is not central DC), DC is a fabulous place with so many great things to see, so I wouldn't avoid it if you are on the East Coast.

South of Market and west of Castro is Diamond Heights, which is one of the
nicer residential neighborhoods in the city. I couldn't imagine anything to
worry about here.

Yup, the main signal I use is the amount of garbage lying around in people's
front yards.
