Transferring money within Europe (French bank stupidity part 99)

I need to transfer some money to an account in Germany (e-bay
purchase), so I went to my bank and asked them about it. "How much?"
said the bank person. "140" I replied. "Marks?" she replied?

Anyway, it went downhill from there. Apparently it will cost 15 Euros
and take at least a week to transfer 140 euros to an account in
Germany. I know that my missus transfers money from Holland for Eur 9
and it takes a couple of days. I wonder what other countries do for
international transfers.

there is an agreement among the states of the european community.-
money transfers to another country belonging to the eu
cost no more than money transfers inside the country.
i.e. normally between 1 and 2.5 eur
whatever the amount is.
you need in this case
IBAN code
BIC code of the bank of the beneficiary
as the money transfer will be dealt with in an authomatic way.

Yes - in fact I supplied those numbers. Now I have checked the bank
list of tariffs it says that the transfer should cost 3.60, so perhaps
the person I spoke to was as ignorant of the tariffs as she was about
the demise of the Mark!

Alternatives:
1. Paypal (yes you can do international payments now)
2. International Money Order

The cost of using an ATM abroad used to be 15 Francs. Maybe she mixed things up.

Don't count on a money order costing much less. I bought one to send
EUR 17.00 from Canada to Holland. It cost me about CDN $5 to buy the
money order. And my recipient's bank in Holland wanted to charge him
EUR 10.00 to cash it.
