Default luggage on trains in Germany

My wife and I will be arriving at Munich airport and we plan to
travel to Garmisch-Partenkirchen via rail. S-bahn to Pasing station,
then RE/RB train to Garmisch.
Question: will it be a problem taking our luggage on the trains?
(One or two checked bags + a carryon each.)
We have never traveled via rail in Germany before and plan to
purchase the rail tickets after arrival.
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. TIA

No problem. There is generally sufficient space on the trains
for your stuff. S-Bahn trains aren't *quite* as nicely fitted
as longer-distance trains, but there are racks of a sort. Plenty
of people with luggage use the S-Bahn from the airport into the city.

Shouldn't be a problem. If you read German reasonably well,
you can probably buy the tickets from automated kiosks.
You probably know to buy second-class tickets, unless you
have a real urgent need to spend extra money for a bit more
room in your seats.

Doubt you'll have many problems, as long as you've checked
on DB's web site and know what the schedules and frequencies
are like. Have a good time.

You should be able to manage. There should be overhead racks.

If you click on the Britsh flag (Union Jack) in the lower left corner the
menue will switch to English.
Here a guide (in German) to the ticket machines:
http://www.bahn.de/imperia/md/content/service/4.pdf
Credit cards are accepted by the machines.
You can buy your ticket from the counter as well (but often the machines are
the faster way).

You can park your luggage at the door areas of the S-Bahn trains (as anyone
does).
Don't know which type of train runs as RE/RB to Garmisch.
The double-deck trains have special areas for heavy luggage or bicycles etc.
in some areas of the lower deck.
Most other modern trains have cars with such an area in some cars too.

We've traveled by rail throughout Germany, but I can't imagine trying to do
it with one or two checked bags each PLUS a carryon. That's an awful lot of
luggage to be hauling up and down train steps.

As a maximum, we do a single checked bag each (and, generally just one
between us), and one carryon each. And THAT is enough to give me a bit of a
workout on the trains sometimes.

I was thinking the exact same thing....while you will be able to find a
luggage cart in the airport you'll be pretty much on your own after that.
You don't "check" luggage on the train, you'll carry it on yourself, stow it
overhead, and get it back down when you reach your destination. 3 bags for
each of you will be quite a juggling act, particularly since the train
doesn't dawdle at the station. I love the train and highly recommend using
it, but I'd travel a little lighter if I were you. Have a great trip!

You shouldn't have any trouble with the luggage. Every train I travelled
on in Germany had a luggage rack. Nor should you have trouble getting
tickets. I always found the ticket sellers very helpful, and they all
spoke English. That's not a guarantee, just my experience.

I stayed in G-P for a few days three years ago and had a great time. We
stayed at the Gasthaus Fraudorfer on Ludwig Strasse for the first. The
rooms were adequate. The hotel staff were wonderful. They had great food
and there was great entertainment, especially the slap dancing. Then we
moved just We spent two nights just down the road at the Poste Hotel
which was very nice, and not much more expensive. It was well worth the
difference, especially for the breakfast buffet. The scenery there is
magnificent and the people were extremely friendly. We had a great time
and I am sure that you will too.

Perhaps they should hire a few Sherpas and a guide to help them with their
luggage and so they'll be able to enjoy a full English breakfast and
afternoon tea in comfort on the peaks of Garmisch. They could be packing a
yurt and a full set of china in those bags. Or should someone tell them
that Germans supposedly now have laundromats and personal hygiene products,
remarkably enough? Germany still don't have enough McDonalds though since
you can still go for a block without seeing one, so their luggage might be
filled with frozen Big Macs and Quarterpounders, just in case they get
desperate. Any other guesses?

My personal advice: after you have packed the luggage, experiment
carrying it around a block or two. If you can't do it at home, you won't
do it abroad. I do it when I have to travel relying on public
transportation, and I usually end unpacking everything and repacking
lighter.

In any case, don't pack more than two bags unless you happen to have
more than two arms.

Calculate a bit of time for changing trains in Pasing. The Pasing
station has no elevators, so you will have to use the stairs for
changing from platform 6/7 (where your S-Bahn will arrive) to platform
3 (where the RE/RB train will depart). There are some baggage belts
along the stairs that should help you to move your stuff up and down
but they don't seem to work too well.

No problem. There's a ticket counter close to the escalator to the
S-Bahn platforms right in the terminal of the airport, just in case
you can't figure what you have to enter at the ticket machine (that
also accepts major credit cards).

Jens (living about a mile from the Pasing station and using it quite
frequently)

The sort of people who enjoy a full English breakfast and afternoon
tea aren't likely to be worried by the absence of McDonalds!

We might be bringing an emergency supply of Marmite and McVitie's
Digestives, though :-)

Hi Doug,

if you arrive between Monday and Friday and start travel
after 9 a.m., buy a "Bayern Ticket" ("Bavaria Ticket") for
21.- Euro. It´s valid for up to 5 persons on all regional trains
in Bavaria (S, RB and RE - trains), so you can use it for your
complete trip to Garmisch (and, if you want, for an excursion
from Garmisch to Mittenwald and back on the same day, nice scenery).
If yor arrive at Saturday or Sunday, buy a "Schönes Wochenende Ticket"
(Nice Weekend Ticket) for 28.- Euro, which have the same conditions,
but it´s valid in total Germany (!) and before 9 a.m., too.
Boths tickets are sold from ticket-vending machines and ticket-counters
at the airport.

Greetings

Peter

I read that as one or two checked bags TOTAL, plus a carryon each.

Even Baghdad has enough McDonalds.

My wife and I just returned from a Christmas Market trip to Germany. Had
one bag each plus backpacks and (later) shopping bags. Had no problem
using trains. Some have luggage racks near the door, and of course,
overhead racks. The fact is that most people will not have luggage or if
they do, their luggage will be quite small, so there is plenty of space
for all your needs. I believe we could always use escalotors or steps with
conveyors for luggage in larger cities, (Nuremberg and Stuttgart) but in
smaller towns you will no doubt, have to manage steps.

BTW, you can purchase tickets online and make reservations too, at
wwww.db.de or at the minimum, get the train schedule you need. If you can
guarantee when you want to travel and don't miss a train, you can save a
lot. Of course, regional passes are the way to go if applicable.
