Just leave the change or round up to the nearest Euro or whatever. Maybe throw in a
little extra if that's only a few cents. But the country is sufficiently civilized
that tipping is not a big deal.

Re: tipping..Spain
Hi
I was in Spain (Estapona) in July. I had a meal and a half pint of beer at Bar Ibiza
(avoid it like the plague). The meal was fixed price (5.95 Euro) and was very nice.
I left a 2.00 Euro tip on the table and went in to pay. He charged me 8.50 Euro. I
asked why it was so much more than on the board and he explained "the beer". A half
pint of beer should cost no more than
1.50 Euro and he was charging me almost 2.50 Euro. However, this was my first full
day there and I did not want the hassle, so I paid him. As I left he said "see you
again Senor" to which I replied "No, I don't think you will!". Then, making sure
he saw what I was doing, I took the 2.00 Euro tip from the table and put it back in
my pocket. His wife was cackling at him furiously, in fact she seemed to be trying
to discourage him from overcharging me in the first place (she was talking in
Spanish so I can't be sure!)
Anyway, the moral is, tip when you feel you have had service and prices that warrant
it, and at a rate that reflects that.
Cheers.

In a bar/restaurant is is almost always more expensive in Spain to eat at a table.
Think of it as a sur charge for use of the table...and for delivery of your
food/drink. For the most inexpensive meal, you eat standing at the bar. Many places
that have tourists show the different prices on their menu (if they have one).....but
most often, it is a given that you understand this.
Also, in a restaurant check you bill for a built-in gratutity. Then leave a small
amount over that, if you wish. Otherwise 10% is good for a meal. Small change
for drinks only. Don't sweat it....we are not talking about enough money to ruin
a day over ;-)
If you *really* think you have been done wrong, ask for the restaurant's "complaint
book" and put it into writing.

I understand, but this "eatery" was just a kitchen with 6 or 7 tables outside. There
was no option but to sit outside. The price was on a board and was the "special".
The guy was clearly trying to charge me too much for the beer. He's loss, because I
ate elsewhere for the rest of the week!

Not much, if at all.
If people do tip, they leave a bit of _small_ change behind from the change they
receive. But your average camarero won't expect it....
hwyl! geraint.

Ditto. It's just not the custom to leave much. However, France? That's a whole
other world.
