Default visa - foreign tranaction fee

Sorry if this a repeat question as I don't visit this newsgroup much.
My last visit to Europe in 2000 was uneventful as far as credit card
transactions were concerned.
I went to China last year and my visa charges were hit with a 3%
transaction fee which mounted up fast.
Are there any cards with better deals. I know AMEX is 2%.

These charges are not new (though they may have been hiked half a
percent or so) - they were there in 2000 when you made your last trip.
At that time the CC companies hid them in the exchange rate without
telling you - now they give you the proper exchange rate and then apply
the charges as a separate item.

There are companies that don't levy them - in the UK Nationwide for
example. Don't know for the US if that's where you are from but they do
get mentioned from time to time on these forums.

It depends on the bank issuing your credit card. If you search the archives,
you will find many threads on this subject, with the cheaper banks
identified. I use a credit union Visa; the only charge is the standard 1%.
Remember there are two issues: the conversion rate and the percentage
transaction fee. I'd be surprised if AmEx is better in hte end. I do know
it's much less widely accepted.

I was reading somewhere that if you are from the USA and are using a
Capital One card, there is no charge at all. I tried to get an
answerfrom Capital ONE, but they didn't reply.

WE got one hoping that it is true, haven't tried it yet. My bank ATM
promises no ATM fees ,ever, but it is a huge hassle to get the rebate on
the overseas charges, typically 1.50 or so so for 3 or 4 transactions it is
a bit of a hassle to round up the receipts, make copies, send a letter to
wherever (can't do it locally of course).

My credit union CC charges the 1% that VISA collect but nothing else.

ps. The AMEX CC charges and AMEX cash withdrawals directly from my
Fidelity account cost more that my credit union CC charges and cash
withdrawal from my CU account.

Just returned from a European trip.

Prior to leaving, we called our 3 Visa Bank Cards - MBNA, Chase, and Navy
Federal Credit Union.

All three said that VISA itself charges a flat 1%.

MBNA hooked on 2%; Chase added 3% more. Navy Federal did not charge.. So
that is the card we took with us.

Best to call all your cards to see which is the most advantageous to take.
