I am planning atrip to uganda
Hi
I am planning a trip to uganda in a few weeks time. I am wondering if
someone has been to kampala and can tell me if it possible to withdraw money
with a bank card from ATMs in that city...

As far as I am aware, it is possible to use your Visa linked card.
However, I am inherently suspicious of ATM's in Africa as it always
seems that they malfunction just when you need them most. Also, you
are at the mercy of the bank's forex rates which can fluctuate from
day to day.
I far prefer to carry cash or TC's.
Enjoy Uganda. It's a beautiful country.

I was able to do it without any problem in 2005, but only in Kampala.
Otherwise (and elsewhere) cash is king, USD or GBP, late model notes
only. I found better exchange rates were offered for bigger notes
(i.e., $100 note vs $10 note).
Enjoy!

We changed dollars at bank in Entebbe but I have seen people using the ATM machines in Kampala. Very jealous of you. Have a great time in Uganda.
What are you planning to do and how long are you going for?
Don't rush out of Entebbe as there is quite a lot to do and see there,. The Botanical gardens, Zoo, Chimpanzee Islands, good fishing the Tuesday market. Good B & B places and small hotels and the Lake Vic Hotel was always nice on Sunday evenings. The small African bars are very safe and friendly. Try the boda bodas to get around. Have a waragi and Stoney for me
If you are British and have time visit the VSO's offices in Kampala to see what the 70+ volunteers are doing in the country.
Also Mnet is all over the country so you can keep in touch with home.
cheers

Re: I am planning atrip to uganda
Many people were having trouble with bank machines in Kampala when we were
there. We managed to get money out of the Barclays Bank ATMs at Garden City
Shopping Centre and at the bank itself downtown using our Royal Bank of
Canada bank cards. Be sure that your PIN is no more than 4 digits. We were
travelling so we had to withdraw a lot of cash since hardly anyone accepts
VISA or debit cards. You could only withdraw 2,000,000 Uganda schillings at
a time and that would empty the machine so the next person in line might be
out of luck. (That did not make people very happy, but Ugandans are used to
things that don't work.) It took us a couple of days to get enough cash for
the whole trip.
