Places to live in and around Calgary....

...for a single, mid 20's, sociable male?

i'll be flying out on August 1st, and have a hotel in Airdrie for a month...had a look at a few threads on here, and most people are emigrating with families and kids....

basically i'd be looking for a "bachelor pad" type place, parking essential, everything else i'm flexible on

i'll be working in Airdrie, so don't want to have to commute ridiculous distances!

had a look on Homerent and Kijiji, and most of what i seem to be coming across is basement suites and house-shares, is this a normality for young, single professionals?

spotted a couple of places ~$800 w/utilities...are these places usually quite reasonable to live in?

any other suggestions?

Hey Haggis,

It depends on what you want. If you want your own space then your going to have to pay a little more.

I looked on kijji when I moved to Calgary on a workpermit a few years ago. Kijji and craigslist was a bit of a headache as you don't always know who your renting with till you see the place.

Try this website its called roommate. Its subscription based but I found it a lot easier.

I'l be moving in September/October time to Calgary. I'l be looking for a roomshare/bachelor pad too!

Rentfaster.ca isn't bad and has a good advanced search engine

thanks for those suggestions guys! been keeping an eye on them the last few days and have a few i'll be calling when i land!

here's a question i hope someone can answer...are landlords likely to ask for some sort of reference? what would this need to contain, and who would be acceptable to get one from?

i currently still live with my parents, so i doubt getting one from them would suffice? (even if i always pay my digs on time lol)

When we rented the house in Calgary the landlord wanted the names and phone numbers from my OH work.
I dont think the references form UK will be any good over here:(

Get references!!!! Make them up! But make sure you add a real phone number of say your mates at home. MOST land lords want them. We had lots of rejections when we first looked.
We had owned out own home in the uk so had no references.
but yes a letter from your employer with anual salary details helps lots. Especially if your employer puts in that your position is permanent and not on a probationary period.

To be fair I would say living in Airdrie is not the norm for young, single professionals who want to have fun and go out on the town. You clearly wanting a car as said parking so why not downtown Calgary and commute to work?

Loads of condos in Calgary to choose from.

yeah that was the plan! i can imagine Airdrie being a bit boring for young people as there doesn't seem to be much here!

only staying in Airdrie just now as its easy access to the factory and i've been here before so thought it'd be easier to just come back to this hotel!

i've seen a few places in Calgary that i like the looks of through rentfaster, so i'll probably give them a call asap!

If you get a downtown apartment in Calgary, the commute will be against he normal flow, plus you'll be at the centre of all the action for nightlife, activities etc.

I should have thought that for a young single person, that would be ideal. I don't imagine I personally would choose Airdrie to live, even at my advanced age!

Disclaimer: no sarcasm or disrespect intended! (I think I'll put this at the end of all my posts from now on.......)

What part of Airdrie do you recommend for a young, single person, close to all the bars, restaurants and nightlife?
