Second hand cars

Hi, been looking at costs of cars, but as a very unmechanical person, obviously don't recognise a lot of the cars, what would you recommend for:

Me to drive kids around it, do shopping, go out for day trips.

I am not precious about cars, care more about the colour! But want something not too expensive. But can throw bags in, tie bikes to the back of etc.And won't embarrass the OH who wants to take up golf again!

Thanks

Could we be a little more specific please?

Price range and location would help....

I tied a mountain bike to a mini in the uk... And I could throw bags in it.... Likewise when I dated a guy with a range rover we could do the same....

Only one I couldnt was the Tr7 of a third division footballer I dated for a few minutes.... Now that was a shit car

Melbourne, suburbs
Up to $10k I think, preferably less.
Thinking mid range family car, decent size boot, drive a bus here and don't want that!
And 3 kids in the back...

We got out mail box painted with a bit of the left over paint... Deqd cool

Which reminds me... Must get HIM to put that up for me... Bin in the garage for two years now gathering dust

http://www.carcity.com.au/index.asp is one I found by googling but I don't know what they're like. Could give you ideas of prices. I found a Voyager early 2000s, with 214000 on the clock for $9980......

They are the same as Vauxhalls in the UK.....same company and mostly the same models

But for $10k you are not going to get much- the price of second hand cars is just silly out here. It was cheaper for OH to buy a new Holden Barina than one that was a couple of years old, thanks to the good deals to be had when they are desperate to sell off stock at the end of the financial year. Cost him $12.5 for a little 3 door hatch. He only uses it for the commute to the station. It can fit a cello in the back though with the seat down, so suprisingly spacious.

This was a couple of years ago, so things may be different as far as deals go.

But do they keep their prices better too? So if you sold it in good nick you would get a good price?

And lastly, insurance, how does that compare cost wise? I pay £300 a year for being old enough to have lots of no claims and driving an older Mpv.
In fact trying to cost out all insurances, is there anything on here where someone has done a fact file?

That is not so easy to answer.

You have to take out third party insurance as part of the cost of annual car registration....you then need to top up with comprehensive cover.

Car insurance may sound cheaper but when you look at the total cost of registration and insurance then they are probably very similar to the UK.
