Problem with Mercadona Dog Food

Now I want to get facts on this problem. There is a thread on another Spanish forum and on Facebook that there is a major problem with Mercadona Compy wet dog food in that it contains excess salt and is causing kidney problems in dogs. How much of this is true I don´t know and would rather have facts in this case. Anyone actually had this food tested or is it all just a rumour.

what are you using the dog food for?, if it is for making a pie for your OH, it should not matter too much, just leave the salt out of the pastry and cut down on the gravy granuals and it will balance the extra salt in the meat.

If it is for the dog, if the case is proven, avoid it all costs.;)

Is that the chunky stuff in sloppy sauce? I've just checked the stuff we use and it's pate - no mention of Compy so I hope that's OK - he eats loads of it:eek:

We became aware of the problem and now get ours from Lidl. The dogs love it.

Yep we're OK - it's quite specific and not the stuff Fraggle eats. I can't tell from the thread whether it's a true problem or an internet scare story - there's a lot of conflicting info.

Re: Problem with Mercadona Dog Food

It's a cheap brand. Since dogs are just dogs it's easy to choose the cheapest stuff to feed 'em. Now, cheap dog food swells in water (put a cookie in a glass of water to test this) and this fills up the dog. Add lots of salt and the dog will want to drink more. Result: everyone happy - until the kidneys fail.
I was worried to read that this only happens to 'ex-pat dogs' - shurely shome mistake?

Re: Problem with Mercadona Dog Food

This is a SERIOUS problem which came to light when the Comfy brand switched from cans to cartons/tetra paks about a month ago. Our dog was fine with the food from the can and within a week of the change was drinking 3 to 4 litres of water a day. Initial blood and urine tests showed all was OK but in the last couple of days our dog was drinking in excess of 4 litres a day and now is vomiting water. She has been admitted to the vet where she is on a drip over the weekend. Blood tests today showed possible kidney failure. I have since found a near neighbour whose dog has the same symptons from eating this food.

There is nothing about this in the Spanish press yet Mercadona have removed the brand from sale.

But wouldn´t this also apply in France as this is where Mercadona is from?

I understand this new brand in cartons was being trialled in the Almeria to Alicante area. We have spoken to Mercadona this afternoon, as have many others, and they are aware of the problem and the product has been withdrawn from sale for testing.

It is irrelevant where Mercadona is from, numerous much loved dogs are either dead or seriously ill with COMPY brand wet food in cartons as the common denominator.
