It may be a grey import, but who gives a shit as long as you save money.

I would second this too - they are based in North Sydney and Brisbane so they post their items from there thus saving any possible import tax issues :)

Dont mean to be ignorant, but what is a 'grey import?'

I have seen the camera I like, and it comes with a very good deal that beats the likes of Dick Smith and Harvey Norman etc hands down on price by a couple of hundred bucks along with some stuff added in.

Dick Smiths told me this morning to not bother as if it is from the USA the Canon warranty will be void and I 'may as well get it from them as it is easier'.

A grey import is a genuine product that is imported entirely separate from the official distributor. So Canon will have their own outfit in Australia, or have an authorised importer/distributor/service agent. If you buy the camera online from an overseas site, it will be the same as the one sold in Australia, but without a local manufacturers warranty and support. It will cost you a whole lot less though, and I am of the opinion that if it is a relatively low cost item, the warranty does not mean much as these kind of products rarely have problems in their first year. Some of these websites offer a 3rd party warranty anyway

Dick Smith are full of shit

They sure are full of shit, the one I want is on eglobaldigitalcameras and I get the twin Canon 550 D lense kit, a bag, a 16gb HD memory card, HDMI cable and a spare battery for slightly under a grand, obviously there is shipping on that but the guy at Dick Smith said they cannot compete with that and then said the stuff about the warranty and if it breaks I will be stuffed.

But it sure is a big price difference.

Checked out your link (it is a grey import) and that is a good price - enough to forgo a local warranty IMO. They are based in HK, ask them if they offer a 3rd party warranty in Australia.

bhphotovideo.com great site and used to have one of the better prices on just about anything. I also use mysimon.com for price checking. Both are USA based, though

I know you can do an extended warranty and they said if there are any problems you have to send it off to them.

My tutor who is a photographer said it is an excellent deal, I just bundled in the 16gb HD memory card, the bag, the cable, the spare battery - excellent.

I have to save for it and sell my Canon legria camcorder to get this camera but it is what I am aiming for and the site seems to have good reviews as well.

I would pay about $1,200 in Dick Smiths without any of the extras.:( And I have heard that Dick Smiths are not exactly forward in helping when their stuff breaks, my mates plasma TV broke after two weeks and they refused to accept it back, telling him it would have to be sent off.

I bought a new Pentax SLR body earlier this year and looked at all the options. The grey imports were only marginally cheaper (Pentax have very fair pricing in Australia compared to Canon etc) so I went for a local supplier and full local guarantee. For the first time in many years I got a dud camera (last one was a Nikon) and the LCD screen just did not work.

I rang the local branch of the supplier and they had a replacement for me within a week. I hate to think how long it may have taken via a third party warranty and having to ship the faulty camera back to HK or wherever for verification of the fault.

BTW do you all read the reviews at www.dpreview.com ? The forums there are well worth browsing before you purchase.

Some things are no more expensive here, consumer electronics are a prime example. If the price is only 10-20% more then it may not be worth importing.

Second this, and also try Adorama - another NYC-based retailer of equal stature and reputation. I've used both quite a bit for cameras, lenses, filters etc.
