Car trouble

Help!!!:confused::confused:
I can't seem to find the answers to a few questions - and I know they are really dumb ones but bear with me please.
- Is it law in Canada to have motor insurance and do you have to produce it when registering the vehicle in your name ( I know it is very important to have it)
and
- can I buy a car without a canadian drivers licence.

Yes and yes (at least in the populated provinces, there may be exceptions in the NWT or the Yukon or Saskatchewan).

Thanks for that, we are in Quebec so I imagine this still applies.
I will need to go out and get car insurance before I can purchase a car.

Yes, but usually it would go:

- get list of interesting cars
- get insurance quotes
- put deposit on car
- insure it. The dealer and the insurance broker will sort out the mechanics of registration and put the plates on.
- pick up car

QC provides itself on being different and on its distinctiveness but in this respect it is no different than other provinces.

if you have some kind of resident status in canada you might want to check out with your provincial authorities how long you are allowed to drive with your uk license before you need a local one.
be aware that in most cases a work or study permit turns you into a temporary resident...
