August/September weather in Melbourne?
 

My wife and I have an invitation to visit Melbourne during this next
August/September. We know that's into spring there, and wonder if we could
exxpect a lot of rain. Obviously, we'd like to have mostly sunny weather if
we decide to go.

Melbourne, like most of Australia, is still experiencing the drought that
has been with us for nearly two years. We would really like it to pour cats
and dogs for the next 6 months. So if you come and effect by your presence a
breaking of the drought in September you will be witnessing the greatest
celebrations known to Australians!

Seriously, if it does rain in Melbourne while you are here, it will not be
heavy rain by tropical standards and you will only need a good umbrella to
enjoy yourself.

It always rains in Melbourne.
It's the most depressing place in Australia weather wise.
Otherwise it's a great place!

I used to have offices just nearby the Old Melbourne Inn which has an
outdoor swimming pool - you could always tell the overseas visitors from the
Northern Climes 'cos they were swimming in the pool June, July, August,
September. Brrrrrrrrrrr. A winter's day in Melbourne can be like a good
summer's day in Scotland.

There are actually less rainy days in Melbourne than in Sydney.

2 years ago we were in Syd. end July, early Aug. for a week,
rain every day with just one exception.
At the same time it was sunshine every day in Melbourne.
Mind you, we would dearly love some of your rain at present.

I remember the first time I went to Sydney. It rained every day for about
5 days. And everyone said that I ought to be used to it coming from the
UK. Sydney is a lot wetter than London and we were in the middle of a
drought at the time.

Nope! According to the Bureau of Meteorology there are more "raindays" in
Melbourne BUT more overall rainfall in Sydney (I do recall this topic being
discussed on this NG before...). Quite frankly, who cares? Go, you'll have
a great time regardless of the weather! Just remember that you will be at
the end of winter and early spring so don't expect balmy days at the beach
(although you never can tell...). You can check out average max and min
