Visited last year and found that the last week in September was beautiful,
but it peaked a little after our visit.

It can vary because of local conditions such as rainfall and
temperatures. We went to Vermont one year at Columbus Day weekend
which was a good time. Maine may vary by areas and much would be
earlier. It might be a good idea to have hotel reservations ahead of
time.
We didn't. There was a station that broadcast availability. There was
one B&B that had a room with bunk beds. That was it for Vermont. We
wound up in Troy, NY which was on our way home so it worked out.
