Default winter gardening....

AGAIN, my constant search for things and services from this group.

1) MePat is building me a 3-stall composter, does anyone know where I can scrounge some "free" pallets in the Algarve and/or CHEAP boards?

2) Is there anywhere I can get some WORMS for the composter?

Try builder's merchants or farming co-operatives etc for pallets but they might want paying for them and worms you should be able to get from a fishing shop.

I've no idea but I'd have thought worms is worms & all do what worms do.

That's what I'd do but it should be noted that I'm the world's worst gardener..... Everything I've ever planted in my life has either committed suicide or been eaten by wild boar & deer.......... except for one crop of sweetcorn that I planted last year which gave me a few cobs but even then, it was only a few out of 50 plants.

Cue the violins! LOL

Worms is NOT worms .... or at least, not necessarily the type you want. However, such is the wonder of nature that the correct worms for your region will magically appear if you create the correct conditions for them - otherwise, nothing would ever get broken down in the country. The conditions needed are damp, dark and warm .... provide those and off you go.

Equally, you can buy "compost starter", but mother nature doesn't use that shop either. If the man of the house pees on the compost heap, it might help as urine is the fastest acting, highest nitrogen part of mammalian waste - and Male urine is slightly less acidic than Female....

In Portugal, composting is likely to occur all year round, providing the heap is kept moist and the temperature is kept under control.

We are avid composters and usually build a 3-bin compost....love the idea of Man-Pee. I know worms will come eventually just wanting to jump start it process a bit.
